While it took over 5 years to accomplish, we have now reviewed 20 different types of jerky. By far and away beef is most often associated with jerky. Bison and turkey jerky are probably the other most common types of traditional jerky. Today, you can purchase ‘jerky’’ such as mushroom, coconut, and python just to mention a few. Some types of jerky on our radar but not officially reviewed to date are lamb, reindeer, alpaca, crocodile, yak, insect, antelope, kangaroo, kelp, and pheasant to name some.
The most basic definition of jerky is ‘dried meat’. Yes, there are rules being bent with calling for example mushroom and coconut jerky products. Our general rule of thumb is that the bag must have the word jerky displayed.
The various Jerky Types are divided into three different species:
Mammal: a warm-blooded vertebrate animal of a class that is distinguished by the possession of hair or fur, the secretion of milk by females for the nourishment of the young, and (typically) the birth of live young.
Bird: a warm-blooded egg-laying vertebrate distinguished by the possession of feathers, wings, and a beak and (typically) by being able to fly.
Other: a general category that includes vegetables, turtles, snakes, fish, and vegan.
