Tahoe Truckee Jerky, located near the Nevada border in California, not too far away from Lake Tahoe, has built a strong reputation over the past 21 years for producing high-quality, tender jerky that has gained global recognition. This family-owned business takes pride in sourcing only the finest U.S. beef, ensuring its products are exceptional compared to many other jerky brands that rely on imported meat.
Tahoe Truckee Jerky offers a diverse range of products, including beef, venison, elk, and buffalo jerky, as well as more unique options like Ahi tuna, salmon, and Hawaiian-style pork jerky. They also feature a special “Real McCoy” jerky, a thicker, drier cowboy-style jerky reminiscent of pot roast. The brand’s commitment to quality and variety has made it a favorite for jerky enthusiasts looking for something extraordinary. This Tahoe Truckee Jerky brand is distributed under the name of Tahoe Territory Kitchens, located in Truckee, California.
The first review on Tahoe Truckee Jerky will focus on a 2.25 ounce/64 gram bag of their Original flavored beef jerky. This bag was purchased at a Dart Beverage Center in Stateline, Nevada.
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Wheat, Salt), Brown Sugar, Water, Granulated Garlic, Liquid Smoke (Water, Hickory Smoke Concentrate), Black Pepper, Sodium Nitrite. Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat
The beef used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. Also, the beef is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to graze on grass. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.
The liquid marinade is comprised of a decent brand of soy sauce, water, and liquid smoke.
The only healthy ingredients added are granulated garlic and black pepper.
The sugar level is a little high at 4 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference is 3 grams of sugar or less per 28 grams of jerky for an original flavor. The salt level is acceptable at 340mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.
This jerky does not qualify to have no sodium nitrite added as sodium nitrite is used outright as a preservative to lose a rating. Admirably, there is no MSG added.
Alright (6/10) – Ingredient Rating
Taste Review
TAHOE TRUCKEE JERKY – ORIGINAL BEEF JERKY
Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker
When I open the bag I smell sweet. The pieces are small to medium in size and sliced thin. The jerky is soft and pliable, leaving no oily residue on your fingers.
When I bite into the jerky I taste medium salt, just enough sweet, pepper, at a decent level, along with slight garlic and slight onion.
Typical of a traditional original flavor, as this particular make and model is, and I am enjoying it, but it does not by any means blow me away. I am confident in an 8/10, possibly a 9/10, if need be, but this particular jerky is not shaking my tree. Sorry to say.
Here is what Mark had to say about this Original beef jerky flavor from Tahoe Truckee Jerky: “Thanks Paul for the candid taste review. This original flavor was reminiscent of how my homemade original beef jerky tastes. Two big differences are that my homemade jerky had the garlic and onion dialed up and less sweet tasting. Arguably, this original flavor is slightly too sweet tasting, somewhat muting the natural beef flavor. The flavor of soy is prominent, and the taste of smoke is at a light level in the background. While this original flavor is enjoyable, only a small ‘wow’ factor is present. A unanimous Good (8/10) taste rating will be awarded.”
This 2.25 ounce/64 gram bag of jerky sells for $7.99, which equates to $3.55 an ounce. That rates as an average price.
Bag Review
This black resealable bag has a label on the front and nothing on the back. There is a picture depicting a paddlewheel boat on Lake Tahoe with trees and mountains in the background.
A slogan printed on this bag may be “Steak Cut Beef Jerky”. Some facts printed are “Local Craft Jerky”, “USA Beef”, and “USA Made”.
The only missing bag category is a blurb about Tahoe Truckee Jerky or this flavor.
