Jerky News – First Time Jerky Submitted for Review

Friday, August 8, 2014 Leave a Comment

Jerky Ingredients News ItemWe now have a new JERKY NEWS category. As a new, exciting milestone for Jerky Ingredients, in the coming days, weeks and months, we will have reviews for jerky graciously submitted by jerky makers. Special thanks go out to Michael Strollo at Strollo’s, Dr. Chuck at Maui~Licious, Phillip Morgan at Phil’s Beef Jerky, James Schaft (a.k.a. – Jimmy the Jerky Man) at Sierra Madre Provision Co., and Michael J. Robin at Astig Premium Jerky.

Astig Premium Jerky

Astig is a word in the Philippines language Tagalog (pronounced ta-ga-lawg), below is a definition:

ASTIG:  (pronounced ă-steeg) is a Tagalog slang term that means cool,  badass or kickass.

Astig Premium Jerky is based out of Thousand Oaks, California, and currently carries the Filipino based flavors Tocino, Spicy Tocino, and Adobo. A new Tocino flavored Bacon jerky is coming next year, where bacon jerky is currently very popular in the jerky world.

Strollo’s

Strollo’s, which I have previously reviewed once, is based out of Eatontown, New Jersey, and carries four flavors (Mild, Garlic, Hot, Hot Garlic). In 2013, while visiting Phillipsburg, New Jersey, with some luck involved, I found this Strollo’s beef jerky brand at a liquor store.

Michael Strollo, the owner of Strollo’s beef jerky, takes great pride in his homemade recipes, using only five ingredients. While I cannot substantiate this claim, Strollo’s claims to have the lowest sodium in the USA, along with zero sugars and zero carbs.

Strollo’s is in the process of producing a 100% Preserve Free Jerky, which will illuminate three of the ingredients that are currently in their product, to branch out into the Whole Foods and Natural Store Markets. That means Strollo’s won’t only be the lowest in sodium and sugar free, but it will also be Preservative Free, and All Natural. A first in the mainstream Jerky Market, and in the Artisan Market as well.

Phil’s Beef Jerky

Phil’s Beef Jerky is located in Tye, Texas, and has four flavors (Mild, Teriyaki, Hot, Hickory). In 2012, I made an online purchase for all four flavors.

Phil’s Beef Jerky comes in a 4 oz vacuum sealed package, which keeps it fresh for up to one year, unlike bags that have oxygen absorbers inside. It contains slab jerky that you can sink your teeth into, and enjoy a piece of jerky instead of little bite size pieces that taste processed.

Phil’s Beef Jerky uses 100 percent beef, and is not processed. It is made from spices that are in your local store, and blended to make a great flavor, and just enough heat to say WOW, that was really good. Phil’s Beef Jerky Mild flavor was rated best buy in a national testing company.

Coming soon, Phil’s Beef Jerky will be coming out with 2 oz bags of beef jerky, with the same great taste and flavor that the 4 oz bags are made with.

Sierra Madre Provisions Co.

Sierra Madre Provision Co. is based out of Sierra Madre, California, and they use ranch raised beef for their jerky. Back in February 2014, I wrote a review on Sierra Madre Provision Co. honey teriyaki beef jerky. I initially discovered Sierra Madre Provision Co. beef jerky while, coincidentally, traveling through San Clemente, California, in 2011, when I also purchased the Maui~Licious jerky.

In the thick cut, Sierra Madre Provision Co. have a total of 14 different flavors, additional styles of jerky include – thin slice – dried beef – kippered. The flavors submitted for review are Whiskey BBQ, Ring of Fire, Original, and Sweet and Spicy. Sierra Madre Provision Co. has been in business for over 30 years, selling wholesale and retail. A new web site is coming in a month.

Maui~Licious

Maui~Licious is made in San Juan Capistrano, California, and carries four different Hawaiian based flavors (Original, Hot, Sweet N’ Spicy, Teriyaki). I had previously purchased these four flavors on a trip to California in 2011, while passing through San Clemente, California, located off the San Diego Freeway, ironically when I also bought Sierra Madre Provision Co. beef jerky.

Maui~Licious beef jerky is a cut above beef jerky products found in the market, which I refer to as standard fare jerky. It is a great purchase for the buyer looking for quality and value.
