The first review on Greenport Jerky Company will focus on a 2.5 ounce/71 gram bag of their Shelter Island 114 IPA Beer flavored beef jerky. This flavor is described as a beefy flavor with light notes of tangerine and a peppery finish. The jerky was kindly submitted for review by Co/Head JERK Vincent Macchirole.
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Brown Sugar, Water, IPA Beer (Malt, Hops, Sugar, Yeast, Water), Sugar, Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Wheat, Salt), Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Liquid Smoke (Water, Hickory Smoke Concentrate), Spices, Sodium Nitrite. Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat
The brisket cut of beef used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. Also, the beef is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to graze on grass. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.
The liquid marinade used here is comprised of water, a craft IPA beer from Shelter Island, an average brand of soy sauce, and liquid smoke.
The sugar is a little high at 4 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference is 3 grams of sugar or less per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is acceptable at 280mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.
This jerky does not qualify to have no sodium nitrite added as sodium nitrate is used outright as a preservative to lose a rating. Admirably, there is no MSG added.
Alright (6/10) – Ingredient Rating

GREENPORT JERKY COMPANY – SHELTER ISLAND 114 IPA BEER BEEF JERKY
Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker
When I open the bag I smell a juice of some sort, possibly vinegar. The strips are medium in size and sliced to a medium thickness. The jerky is soft and juicy, not quite as our forefathers intended. The jerky is a bit moist, and it leaves a slight bit of oily residue on your fingertips.
When I bite into the jerky, I am met with mild salt, but, as I feared, it is too sweet. I detect slight pepper in the background, but I’m not convinced that I taste garlic or onion.
Also, I don’t think I waited too long, but I do not detect any IPA flavor. The sweetness is too intense to taste much else in this jerky flavor. I am somewhat disappointed. I was hoping to pick up on the IPA flavor, but I don’t.
In conclusion, I can go no higher than a 7/10, but this review is writing more as a 6/10.
Here is what Mark had to say about this Shelter Island 114 IPA Beer beef jerky flavor from Greenport Jerky Company: “Thanks Paul for the candid taste review. Paul and I are at complete odds here. First, the jerky reeks of IPA beer. Second, the IPA beer dominates this flavor. Yes, there is some sweetness, but certainly within reason. India Pale Ale happens to be my favorite type of beer. While Paul is a big fan of beer, IPA is his least favorite, usually stating it’s too hoppy tasting. Paul is generally not a fan of fruit, and this Shelter Island 114 IPA craft beef uses tangerines, which can explain his taste review and dislike for IPA beer.
Paul has a history of not picking up the taste of beer on various beer flavors that we reviewed. A complaint about the texture not being dry enough is not valid either, as this flavor is advertised as having a tender texture, which Paul would not have known. The soy flavor is mild, the smoked flavor light, and the garlic and onion are faint tasting. Make no mistake, the IPA beer is the star of the show here. I will take Paul’s rating of a 7 not knowing this jerky is advertised as being tender, and myself with zero complaints at a 10 rating, a Very Good (9/10) taste rating will be awarded. Two thumbs up for India Pale Ale beer lovers!!👍👍 Live, Love & JERK ON!”
This 2.5 ounce/71 gram bag of jerky sells online for $11.00. That works out to $4.40 an ounce, which rates as a expensive price.

Bag Review
This silver, resealable plastic bag has a label affixed to the front and nothing on the back. The logo of Shelter Island Craft Brewery is displayed.
A slogan printed could be “Signature Collection”. The only fact printed on this bag is “Liquid Smoke Added”.
The only missing bag category is a blurb about Greenport Jerky Company or this flavor.
