While it took near five years to accomplish, we have now reviewed over $5,000 worth of jerky. The expensive price of jerky is easily the single biggest complaint of jerky. While we agree that jerky is not cheap, you do pay for quality. In 2011, we could find, let’s say, inside round beef for $1.99 a pound. Today in 2018, we are hard pressed to find inside round for $3.99 or under. In other words, the price of beef has more or less doubled in the last seven years.

Jerky makers have three main choices when faced with increased costs of meat. One, absorb the extra cost and do nothing. Two, charge more for their jerky. Three, one of the more common measures are to decrease the amount of jerky. You would hope that a jerky maker does not use a 4th option of using inferior, less expensive ingredients, and by extension, usually not as healthy. A 5th option may be if possible for a jerky maker to change copackers, also known as a private labeler.
A decade ago, 4 ounce jerky bags were more the industry standard. Today in 2018, 3 ounce bags unfortunately has sort of become the industry standard. Sadly, it is not all that uncommon nowadays to see 2.75 oz, 2.5 oz, and 2.25 oz bags for sale.
When this web site started in January 2014, we established what we thought was fair price ranges to establish when jerky was a cheap, average, or expensive price. By 2017, it was becoming more and more obvious that these price ranges were out of date. Few jerky brands were getting classified as a cheap price, and many brands were falling into the expensive category. In July 2017, we posted a Jerky Price Update. Little did we know that this July 2017 Jerky Price Update post would become viral in a sense, which has become our 5th most popular page on this jerky review web site since July 2017 according to Google Analytics.
It would appear that we here at Jerky Ingredients have had a helping hand in setting jerky prices across the world. In what is now an annual event every summer, we published an updated jerky price range update in August 2018. Thankfully between 2017 and 2018, the price of beef jerky only went up 5 cents per ounce according to all of the jerky that we reviewed. For the record, jerky price ranges are more established using the median price rather than the mean price.
The figure of $5,000 worth of jerky reviewed is misleading. The actual figure is higher, where the $5,000 only includes unique bags of jerky reviewed. If, for example, a jerky maker submits two 3 oz bags of the same flavor, then that only counts as one 3 oz bag. If, for example, a jerky maker sends us one 3 oz bag and one 1 oz bag of the same flavor, that does count as two bags reviewed. There needs to be something unique about the bag, whether the bag size is different, the bag design changed, or the jerky has been reformulated.
We are proud of offering great exposure, giving the opportunity to get each and every jerky brand known to the market and community in this maybe now 3 Billion Dollars annual sales jerky industry.
