My wife Stephanie (Birdie) and I’s trip to California was a success, mainly based at Port Hueneme, Madera, and Lake Tahoe. It was great to catch up on Steph’s extended family and friends. As with any trip to the USA, I tried to line up six jerky submissions, which I did. Usually, one or two jerky makers bow out at the last minute for whatever reason. On this particular trip, only three of the six jerky makers came through with a submission.
A special thanks to Sierra Madre Provisions Co., Stevie G Jerky, and Vermont’s Farmhouse Jerky for their jerky submissions and contributions to the Jerky Shrine, helping us get over 1,700 Jerky Shrine Bags jerky bags from over 400 Jerky Shrine brands and 100 Jerky Shrine Brands on display.
At least seven jerky makers invited us to their home, boat, or places of business. We had a busy itinerary and had to respectfully decline most requests unless the location was not too far out of the way. It was hard to believe that the last time I visited California was in 2012, when a trip to California in Spring 2020 for my mother-in-law’s 80th birthday was canceled due to the lockdown nonsense.
From most of 2020 to 2021, with the Canada/USA border closed to travelers, a conscious decision was made to focus on bigger jerky brands and less on jerky submissions. After this California trip, I am returning to my roots, focusing more on small craft jerky brands. We managed to put on over 1200 miles on our rental car for this trip to California.
Before this California trip, much research was done to find what California jerky brands were available. Surprisingly, I found the majority of the jerky brands on my wish list. As always, the best places to find new jerky brands are convenience stores, liquor stores, and grocery stores. Much of it is dumb luck, where you have no idea what to expect from location to location.
Based on my travels to the USA, California is hands down the best state to find the most extensive variety of jerky brands. Having reviewed over 325 jerky brands to date, it is challenging to find new jerky brands that have not yet been reviewed. After doing jerky reviews for ten years now, we finally have the opportunity to review jerky from Kentucky and Alaska. The seven remaining states’ jerky brand reviews missing are Alabama, Delaware, Maine, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Wyoming as a stated goal to review.
Our next trip to the USA will be to New Jersey over the Christmas and New Year holidays. At least five jerky makers have already committed to submitting their jerky on that upcoming trip. If any jerky maker is interested in submitting their jerky on that trip, email us at jerkyingredients@gmail.com, where a limited number of spots are available.
Below is a list of jerky brands acquired on this trip to California, which will keep Paul, sometimes with Stéphane, and me busy in the second half of 2024. Forty-six jerky bags were found from 36 jerky brands, 31 new to this jerky review website.
