The first review on Mythical Meats will focus on a 2.75 ounce/78 gram bag of Lemon Pepper flavored swordfish jerky. This is flavor as described as offering a rich, savory taste with tangy notes of a lemon pepper Mosasaurus-themed flavor. The bag was purchased at a Beef Jerky Outlet store in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Swordfish, Brown Sugar, Teriyaki Sauce (Soy Sauce (Water, Wheat, Soybeans, Salt), Wine, Sugar, Water, Vinegar, Salt, Onion Powder, Spice Extractives, Succinic Acid, Garlic Powder), Lemon Juice, Water, Garlic, Lemon Pepper (Lemon Peel, Spices, Onion, Salt, Sugar, Citric Acid, Monosodium Glutamate, Garlic, Canola Oil), Liquid Smoke (Water, Water, Natural Hickory Smoke Flavor), Vinegar Powder, Celery Powder (Celery Juice Solids, Sea Salt) Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat, Fish (Swordfish)
Swordfish is a firm, meaty fish that offers several notable nutritional benefits when consumed in moderation. It is an excellent source of high quality protein, important B vitamins, and rich in vitamin D. However, swordfish is a large predatory fish, meaning it tends to have higher mercury levels compared to smaller fish. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.
The liquid marinade is comprised of a decent brand of teriyaki sauce, water, healthy lemon juice, and liquid smoke.
Some healthy ingredients added are garlic, lemon peel, spices, and onion.
The sugar level is high at 8 grams per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference is 3 grams of sugar or less per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is acceptable at 290mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.
This jerky qualifies to have no sodium nitrite or any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, the main preservatives used are salt and celery powder to a lesser degree. This jerky does not qualify to have no MSG added, as monosodium glutamate is used outright to lose a rating.
Alright (6/10) – Ingredient Rating
Taste Review
MYSTICAL MEATS – LEMON PEPPER SWORDFISH JERKY
Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker
When I open the bag I smell fish, it’s a very strong odour. The jerky is almost in a predominantly “crumble” form, a few pieces would qualify as medium in size, but mostly just “morsels”, if you like. The jerky is medium soft, and there is no oily residue left on your fingers.
When I bite into the jerky, I taste an overpowering “fishy” taste, almost too intense even for me. It is drowning out all the other flavors and monopolizing this taste review. I taste next to no salt, but do pick up on an extreme sweetness, further sending this flavor to the scrap heap. I can find nothing redeeming regarding this flavor, this is becoming a train wreck. If this is how swordfish is supposed to taste, color me very uninspired. A very disappointed 2/10, I’m out.
Here is what Mark had to say about this Lemon Pepper swordfish jerky flavor from Mythical Meats: “Thanks Paul Rekker for the honest taste review. A 2/10 taste rating is rare, possibly the first of its kind from Paul. Full disclosure, I am not a fan of seafood, but I do have a fair amount of experience trying various types of seafood jerky. I agree with Paul that this swordfish jerky has a strong fishy taste, but not necessarily the strongest of them all. In my humble opinion, the fishy taste is at an acceptable level, and I am sure many fish lovers would agree.”
“Paul has a point in that these jerky strips ‘crumble’. The bag is vacuum sealed, which tends to cause jerky strips tend to fuse together. Normally, you can unpeel the jerky strips, but in this case, it’s impossible. As you unpeel a strip, it just breaks off.”
“I agree with Paul in that sweetness is high and not necessarily needed. Same as Paul, I do not detect much of the lemon pepper flavor because the fishiness and sweetness dominate. The soy flavor comes across at a mild to moderate level, and the smokiness as faint. While I am not nearly as critical as Paul here, I can see seafood fans who are not bothered by the sweetness enjoying this product. With Paul at a 2 and myself at a 6, a Fair (4/10) taste rating will be awarded.”
This 2.75 ounce/78 gram bag of jerky sells online for $11.00, which equates to $4.00 an ounce. That rates as an average price.
Bag Review
This silver plastic resealable bag has a label affixed to the front and nothing on the back. There is an illustration of a Mosasaurus dinosaur on the front. The bag is vacuum sealed, the best way to keep jerky fresh tasting.
There are no slogans displayed on this bag. Some facts printed are “Prehistoric Prime Cuts” and “Mosasaurus”.
Some missing bag categories are a blurb about this jerky or flavor, a best before date, a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) stamp, and an establishment number. A lot number sticker is on the back, which could translate to a best before date.
