MAHOGANY SMOKED MEATS – SWEET & SPICY BEEF JERKY
Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker
When I open the bag I smell nothing. The two pieces I have are large and sliced rather thin. The jerky has a dark hue, which typically means it was dehydrated with a lot of marinade.
The first flavors I detect are sweet, at too high a level, mild salt, mild pepper, and maybe a hint of garlic and onion in the background. I taste the sweetness but have yet to taste any heat whatsoever.
Too much sweetness and not enough spice, to me, earns two deductions in points. Also, this jerky has absolutely no WOW factor!! I find this flavor of jerky to be rather drab, lacking any flair. Therefore, I am rating this flavor of jerky as a 7/10. Gentlemen?
Here is what Mark had to say about this Sweet & Spicy beef jerky flavor from Mahogany Smoked Meats: “Thanks Paul for the honest taste review. After I had consumed the first strip, my taste review would have read almost exactly as Paul’s, including the 7 rating. There was next to no spiciness in the first strip. I disagree that the sweetness level is way too high. While sweet tasting, the sweetness aligns with a Sweet & Spicy flavor. There was more than a hint of garlic flavor present, and it was not mentioned is that the smokiness is at a decent level. I too was not all that impressed after the first strip either, with no ‘wow’ factor. But, as I continued to consume more strips, this jerky flavor grew on me.”
“Eventually, the spiciness became noticeable, but it did not really exceed 1 out of 5 on the heat scale, perhaps a 2. What this tells me is that the marinade is not evenly spread among the jerky strips. This flavor was so much more enjoyable when there was some spiciness to counteract the sweetness. After consuming several strips, my taste rating sort of switched from a 7 to a 9. However, I have to deduct a rating for the heat not being evenly spread and another rating for not having much of a ‘wow’ factor. With Paul at a 7 rating and myself at an 8 rating, A Good (8/10) taste rating will be awarded.”
This 4 ounce/113 gram bag of jerky sells for $13.00, which equates to $3.24 an ounce. That rates as an average price.
Bag Review
This clear, resealable bag has labels affixed to the front and back. The Mahogany Smoked Meats logo has what is presumably a mahogany tree. This bag is vacuum sealed, which is the best way to keep the jerky fresh and tasting.
There are no slogans printed on this bag. Some facts printed are “Natural Smoke Flavoring Added”, “Est. 1922”, “No Preservatives or Nitrates”, “No Artificial Ingredients”, and “Gluten Free”.
Some missing bag categories are a blurb about Mahogany Smoked Meats or this flavor, the jerky weight stated in grams, a barcode, and a nutrition facts table.
