The next review for BeefJerky.Rocks! will focus on a 3 ounce/85 gram bag of their Rockin’ Sriracha flavored beef jerky. This flavor is described as a uniquely spicy jerky that slowly creeps up on you. The jerky was graciously submitted for review by the owner, James Sokol.
This BeefJerky.Rocks! brand name is located in Seymour, Connecticut, and is distributed under the name of Saginaw Snacks, LLC. In 1999, after being fed up with the limited flavors of overpriced jerky, James started making his own homemade jerky. Using feedback from friends and family, James officially launched the BeefJerky.Rocks! brand name in 2015. BeefJerky.Rocks! is advertised as being Gourmet Beef Jerky, meaning the jerky is made only in small batches instead of being mass produced. Only quality ingredients are used, where in BeefJerky.Rocks! words “They don’t skimp on quality; Ever”. If you sign up for the BeefJerky.Rocks! newsletter, you get a coupon for one free bag of jerky.
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Tamari Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Salt, Alcohol), Brown Sugar, Sriracha Sauce (Chili, Sugar, Garlic, Salt, Water, Acetic Acid, Lactic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Ascorbic Acid), Honey, Liquid Smoke, Spices. Allergen Warnings: Soy
The beef used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. This beef is guaranteed to have had some free range access to roam about as nature intended. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Very Good (9/10) rating.
The liquid marinade is comprised of a high quality tamari soy sauce, a good Sriracha sauce, healthy honey, and liquid smoke. Hot peppers are healthy if eaten in moderation, which flush toxins out of the body.
The sugar level is on the high side at 5 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky. Our preference is 3 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky or less. The salt level is at the upper acceptable limit of 350mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.
This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, the main preservative used is salt. Commendably, there is no MSG added.
Very Good (9/10) – Ingredient Rating
Taste Review
These strips of jerky are mainly medium in size, and are sliced borderline thin. The texture is sort of moist, and fairly easy to chew. There are some visible signs of fat, and handling this jerky leaves no oily residue on your fingers.
The first taste detected is a good level of Sriracha sauce, with that great taste of Sriracha peppers. There is a medium to moderate amount of sweetness, which is arguably a bit too sweet tasting. The natural beef flavor is muted to a certain extent from the sweetness.
There is some spiciness, but not that much. On a heat scale, the spiciness would rate a 2 out of 5 at the most. A mild level of soy and light level of garlic blend in nicely. Overall, this flavor delivers with the fine taste of Sriracha.
A 3 ounce/85 gram bag sells online for $9.99. That works out to $3.33 an ounce, which rates as an expensive price. This flavor is recommended to any Sriracha fan that also enjoys some sweetness.
Bag Review
This black resealable bag has a label on the front, and a best before sticker on the back. Their logo is the head of a cow giving two thumbs up.
Slogans printed on this bag are “Yeah it Does”, and “Made in small gourmet batches!”.
The only bag categories missing are distributor address details, and no blurb printed about the jerky or flavor. A QR code on the bag points to the BeefJerky.Rocks! web site.
