The next review on Blackbeard’s will be on a 2.5 ounce/70 gram bag of their teriyaki beef jerky. This bag was purchased at a gas bar convenience store in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania back in 2010.
Blackbeard’s beef jerky is located in Northampton, Pennsylvania, and it is distributed by T & L Distributing. The company was founded in 1990, and they also sell meat snack sticks. The jerky is advertised as using select cuts of meat, slowly marinated with distinctive spices, and then smokehouse cured.
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Brown Sugar, Soy Sauce (Water, Soy Beans, Wheat, Salt, Sodium Benzoate), Salt, Monosodium Glutamate, Spices, Onion Powder, Sodium Nitrite. Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat
The beef used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. Also, the beef is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to graze on grass. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.
The liquid marinade consists of only an average soy sauce.
Some healthy ingredients added are spices and onion powder.
The sugar level is high at 7 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky. For a sweet based flavor as we have here with teriyaki, our preference is 5 grams of sugar or less per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is extremely high at 730mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky, which deducts two ingredient ratings. Our preference is 350mg of salt or less per 28 grams of jerky.
Unfortunately, this jerky uses the unhealthy preservative sodium nitrite. Disappointingly, this jerky does use monosodium glutamate (MSG) outright.

Taste Review

My scant taste notes from 2010 indicated that this texture was soft and tender. The texture had a slightly processed taste and feel. This flavor was strong tasting, but had a peculiar flavor that did not remind you of a teriyaki flavor. More than anything, I remember being disappointed with this flavor.
This 1.5 ounce/42 gram bag cost $2.99 which works out to $1.99 an ounce. That equates to an average price back in 2010.
Bag Review
This bag has a mixture of affixed labels, and more information imprinted directly on the bag. Blackbeard’s can use the same bag for all their flavors, and use custom labels on the back and front for each particular flavor, where this is a stock bag.
The logo appears to be a pirate with a black beard. There are no clearly defined slogans, where perhaps it is “Traditional Style”. Other facts printed on this bag are “Natural Wood Smoked”, “Made from Solid Strips of Premium Beef”, and “Made in USA”.
Most major bag categories are covered here. Missing is the weight displayed in grams, and no blurbs are printed about Blackbeard’s jerky or this teriyaki flavor.
