Jurassic Jerky – Sriracha Style Bacon Jerky

Thursday, November 14, 2019 Leave a Comment

Jurassic Jerky - Sriracha Style Bacon JerkyJurassic Jerky is described as being made by artisan chefs to ensure that every step of the process creates the most flavorful, tender jerky in the world! Working in partnership with USDA with a time-tested family recipe that’s been refined over the years, to make Jurassic Jerky the best Jerky in the world! This Jurassic Jerky brand of jerky was officially launched in 2017.

Commendably, a portion of every bag sold goes to charities who support wounded combat vets and families of fallen law enforcement officers. As with all Jurassic Jerky, it has no preservatives or MSG. Jurassic Jerky is distributed under the name of JJD USA, and they are located in Colton, California.

The next review on Jurassic Jerky will focus on a 2 ounce/56 gram bag of their Sriracha Style flavored bacon jerky. This flavor is described as packing a punch, but since the heat comes from genuine Sriracha Hot Sauce, it has a flavor that can’t be beat! This bag was kindly submitted for review by Shawn Travis.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Uncured Bacon – No Nitrites or Nitrates Except Those Naturally Occurring In Celery Powder and Sea Salt (Pork, Water, Sea Salt, Sugar, Natural Flavors), Sriracha Style Sauce (Ground Red Chili Peppers, Water, Sugar, Ground Garlic, Salt, Contains 2% Or Less Of: Garlic Powder, Cultured Dextrose [For Freshness], Vegetable Extract [Potato], Natural Flavor, Vinegar, Citric Acid, Xanthan Gum), Tamari Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Sugar, Salt), Water, Cayenne Powder, Granulated Garlic, Ground Pepper, Sea Salt, Red Wine Vinegar, Ginger.    Allergen Warnings: Soy

Jurassic Jerky - Sriracha Style Bacon JerkyThe pork is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to roam about outside. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Very Good (9/10) rating.

This is a surprisingly good natural bacon ingredient list. Uncured bacon is used, meaning the bacon was not preserved with nitrates or nitrites

The liquid marinade used here is comprised of a good gluten-free tamari soy sauce, a good sriracha sauce, water, and healthy red wine vinegar.

There are some healthy ingredients added such as cayenne pepper powder, granulated garlic, and black pepper.

The sugar level is fairly high at 6 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference is 4 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky for a hot based flavor. The salt level is high at 600 grams of salt per 28 grams of jerky. However, the salt level is ignored because minimally processed sea salt is used.

This jerky qualifies to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservative. Instead, salt is the main preservative used, and celery powder with its naturally occurring nitrates. With more kudos to Jurassic Jerky, this jerky has no MSG added.

Good (8/10) – Ingredient Rating

Taste Review

JURASSIC JERKY – SRIRACHA STYLE BACON JERKY

Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker

When I open the bag, I don’t smell much, maybe soy. The pieces look exactly like regular bacon, in size, thickness and texture. The jerky is soft and moist, and it leaves some oily residue on your fingers.

When I bite into the jerky, I immediately realize that I am in line for a delectable treat. The jerky is flat out tasty, tasting almost exactly like regular bacon, but with a noticeable zing from the sriracha flavor.

As bacon jerky goes, I typically find it to be much too sweet, but it is definitely not the case here. I am tasting stronger salt, pepper, garlic and the kick of sriracha more than the typically too sweet taste of bacon jerky.

This jerky is head and shoulders above most every other bacon jerky we have sampled to date.

I am a huge fan of regular bacon, but I have found most bacon jerky to be far too sweet. Not the case here, a 10/10 gentlemen…

Here is what Stéphane had to say: “I’m with Paul on this Jurassic Sriracha Style Bacon Jerky. I was a bit lukewarm at first due to the light Sriracha and heat level. After a few bites, the flavor started building up and there are so many good flavors going on, it feels like an explosion. The smokiness and the texture is also dynamite and it certainly feels like a treat.”

Here is what Mark had to say about this Sriracha Style bacon jerky flavor from Jurassic Jerky: “Thanks for the great reviews Paul and Stéphane. I mostly agree with everything Paul said. It’s a stretch to say that this sriracha jerky is head and shoulders better than most. Yes, somewhat less sweet, but there is still a slightly candied texture. We have yet to review a bad sriracha bacon flavor, where they have all been great tasting so far, much made by the same co-packer.”

“Agreed that there is a beautiful taste profile here. One could argue that the Sriracha flavor is not at a high enough spicy level to justify the ‘Sriracha Style’ flavor name without eating the whole bag in one sitting, where I agree. I guess that I am ruled out 2 to 1. My taste rating is Very Good (9/10).”

This 2 ounce/56 gram bag sells online for $6.99, which works out to $3.50 an ounce. That rates as an average price.

Excellent (10/10) – Taste Rating

Bag Review

This black resealable plastic bag has a label affixed to the front, and nothing on the back. The front displays a dinosaur skeleton and fire.

A slogan printed on this bag is “Sweet, Smoky And Spicy”. No facts are printed on this bag.

The only minor bag categories missing are the jerky weight not stated in grams, and no blurb printed about Jurassic Jerky, or this Sriracha Style flavor.

Decent (7/10) – Bag Rating
