Jeff’s Famous Jerky – Teriyaki Turkey Jerky

Friday, September 25, 2020 Leave a Comment

Jeff's Famous Jerky - Teriyaki Turkey JerkyJeff was just a hungry teenager in the 1970’s when he realized his favorite on-the-go snack had the potential to be so much better. That summer, he bought a dehydrator from the county fair and he was fascinated with the process of how the flavors intensified by using flavorful marinades during the dehydration process. Over the years he spent thousands of hours experimenting with recipes, intent on making beef jerky the way that he envisioned it could be… intensely full of flavor, soft and tender with the taste and texture of a fine steak but without the chemical preservatives.

Jeff’s relentless quest for culinary flavor perfection kept him researching different cultural influences and refining and innovating new fusion recipes for more than three decades before he ever offered his jerky for sale to the public in 2010. Soon people from all over the world were enjoying jerky perfection and Jeff’s Famous legacy continues today.

Jeff lives in the pristine, four-season, mountain community of Big Bear Lake, California with his loving vibrant wife, energetic toddler son, and two spoiled cats. He enjoys cooking and great food and quality time with family.

Jeff’s Famous Jerky brand is distributed under the name of Jeff’s Famous Foods, Inc., and they are located in Big Bear Lake, California.

The next review on Jeff’s Famous Jerky will focus on a 2.75 ounce/77.96 gram bag of their Teriyaki flavored turkey jerky. This flavor as described as being soft and tender, 100% all natural, gluten-free Turkey Jerky in popular Teriyaki flavor. The bag was kindly submitted for review by owner Jeff Richards.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Turkey, Gluten Free Reduced Tamari Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Salt, Alcohol), Brown Sugar, Pineapple Juice Concentrate, Granulated Garlic, Black Pepper, Ginger.    Allergen Warnings: Soy

Jeff's Famous Jerky - Teriyaki Turkey JerkyOn the whole, turkey is a leaner and healthier choice of meat compared to using beef. Turkeys raised in the US are not allowed to receive growth hormones. There is no guarantee that the turkey has free range access to roam about. As a result, the highest ingredient rating possible is Very Good (9/10).

This liquid marinade here is comprised of a well-respected brand of gluten free reduced tamari soy sauce, and healthy pineapple juice concentrate.

There are healthy ingredients added, such as granulated garlic and black pepper.

The sugar level is a little high at 6 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference for a sweet based flavor is 5 grams of sugar or less per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is acceptable at 300mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.

This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite or any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, salt is the main preservative used. Admirably, this jerky qualifies to have no MSG added.

Good (8/10) – Ingredient Rating

JEFF’S FAMOUS JERKY – TERIYAKI TURKEY JERKY

Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker

When I open the bag, I smell soy. The jerky is large in size and is sliced to a medium thickness. The jerky is soft, moist, and chewy, and it leaves some oily residue on your fingers.

When I bite into the jerky I can tell right away that I am not tasting beef. It’s not a bad thing, turkey has a good tasting flavor as well.

The first flavors that I encounter are salt, pepper, sweet (maybe a tad too sweet, but still well within reason), garlic, onion, and some natural turkey flavor as well. Overall, moistness aside, a quite decent tasting jerky, it definitely hits on the teriyaki flavor.

Too often in the past teriyaki flavors tend to overdose on the sweetness, but not in this case. While it’s not blowing me away, it is still rather tasty, tasty enough to warrant a 9/10 in my opinion. Gentlemen?

Here is what Mark had to say about this teriyaki turkey jerky flavor from Jeff’s Famous Jerky: “Thanks Paul for the honest experienced taste review. I can’t entirely agree, where this flavor tastes exactly on how it is advertised. It is very soft and tender except for the odd jerky strip. We are agreed that it is sweet-tasting but within reason for a teriyaki flavor. While simple tasting with a very well-balanced taste profile this flavor does come across as a teriyaki flavor with some Asian flair.”

“With this texture being so soft and tender the real star of the show is the taste of natural turkey flavor that shines through. This flavor is even advertised as ‘Even if you don’t like Turkey Jerky you are bound to like this!’, and it’s true.”

“Due to COVID-19, we are down to three members from the Group of Seven for this review. Mark M. quickly stated a 10 rating without hesitation. With myself at a 10 rating also, the majority is going to rule here. Take a bow, Jeff, a well-deserved Excellent (10/10) taste rating it is.”

This 2.75 ounce/77.96 gram bag costs $7.49. That works out to $2.72 an ounce, which rates at an average price. Free shipping is offered on orders over $50.

Excellent (10/10) – Taste Rating
