Kingmade Jerky – Sweet Chili Pepper Beef Jerky

Friday, February 26, 2016 Leave a Comment

Kingmade Jerky - Sweet Chili Pepper Beef JerkyThe first review on Kingmade Jerky will focus on a 2.25 ounce/63 gram bag of their sweet chili pepper flavored beef jerky. This bag was graciously submitted for review by the president, Jeff King.

This Kingmade Jerky brand is distributed by Kingmade, and based out of McKinney, Texas. Jeff has been a caddy in the PGA and LPGA tours since 1998. Frustrated with jerky brands that left you wanting more, Jeff decided to make his own jerky. His jerky quickly became popular on the golf tours, where the demand warranted starting his own jerky brand. In August 2013, Jeff launched the Kingmade Jerky brand. Many of the top professional golfers in the world are fans of his jerky, where you could say that Kingmade Jerky is the unofficial jerky brand of professional golf. The jerky is advertised as being crafted with tender cuts of premium beef flank steak, artfully seasoned, and slow cooked to perfection. It is also advertised to be very low in sugar and salt, which is quite true.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Beef, Water, Brown Sugar (Sugar, Cane Molasses), Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Salt, Wheat Flour, Potassium Sorbate), Natural Smoke Flavoring, Minced Garlic (Garlic, Water, Citric Acid), Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Chili Powder, Cayenne Pepper, Red Pepper.    Allergen Warnings: Soy,
Wheat

Kingmade Jerky - Sweet Chili Pepper Beef JerkyThe flank steak used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. Also, the beef is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to graze on grass. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.

Kingmade Jerky - Sweet Chili Pepper Beef JerkyThe liquid marinade consists of just water and soy sauce. It is not great to see that potassium sorbate is used in the soy sauce as a preservative, but it was never designed to withstand the drying process in making jerky.

Kingmade Jerky - Sweet Chili Pepper Beef JerkyThere are healthy spices used such as garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Super healthy garlic from the allium family is used, which interestingly aids people differently depending on the individual body’s needs.

For a sweet based flavor, the sugar level is very good at only 3 gram of sugar per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is unbelievably low at only 40mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky, the lowest level of salt reviewed to date.

This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservative. Instead, salt is the main preservative used. With further kudos, there is no MSG added.

Good (8/10) – Ingredient Rating

Taste Review

These strips of jerky are mostly small in size, and sliced to a medium thickness. They have a somewhat dry texture, which is not tough to chew. Flank steak is known to be easier to chew compared to the typical inside or outside round cuts of beef used with most other jerky brands. There are visible signs of fat that enhances the natural beef flavor. Handling this jerky leaves a little bit of oily residue on your fingers.

Lots of flavors jump out at first. There is a moderate level of soy. Both the salt and pepper levels are light, although the cayenne pepper is at mild level. It does not take long for the spiciness to become apparent, which is a quick type of burn, instead of one that sneaks up on you. On a heat scale, it would rate about a 2 out of 4, perhaps more depending on your tolerance of heat.

For a sweet based flavor, thankfully, it does not go overboard. It’s a mild sweetness, where their is still a fair amount of natural beef flavor from the flank steak. A mild garlic level is a great compliment. To top it off, a mild smoked taste rounds off the overall flavor.

Ordering online you can purchase six 2.25 ounce/63 gram bags for $42.99. That works out to $3.18 an ounce, which rates as an expensive price. The price is cheaper if you order larger quantities. This jerky is surely recommended to people who enjoy a sweet and spicy based flavor, with less sweet, and more spiciness.

Excellent (10/10) – Taste Rating

Bag Review

This is a standard sized resealable bag. Everything is imprinted directly on the bag, both on the front and the back. The front has a fantastic looking picture of a cow in skiing gear, which certainly makes this bag stand out.

Their slogan is “Premium Beef Jerky for a Better Class of Carnivore”. Some facts printed on this bag are “Flank Steak Beef Jerky”, “8g Protein Per Serving”, “No Nitrites Added”, “96% Fat Free”, “No MSG”, “1g Total Carbs Per Serving”, “Premium Beef”, “Smoke Flavor Added”, and “Jeff King is the Gentleman Behind the Jerky”. There is also a heat meter, described as “The Gentleman’s Guide to Jerky Flavor Intensity”. The heat is rated

All bag categories are covered with this bag. There is a great blurb printed on the bag describing this sweet chili pepper flavor, and Kingmade Jerky.

Excellent (10/10) – Bag Rating
