Atlantic Pride Beef Jerky – Jalapeno Beef Jerky

Wednesday, June 22, 2016 Leave a Comment

Atlantic Pride Beef Jerky - Jalapeno Beef JerkyThe next review on Atlantic Pride Beef Jerky will focus on a 3.25 ounce/91 gram bag of their Jalapeno flavored beef jerky. This bag was purchased at a gas station in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The Atlantic Pride Beef Jerky brand name is distributed by Atlantic Dominion, located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. They were established in 1875, and today advertise themselves as the 16th largest convenience store distributor in the United States. They currently supply over 10,000 different products to all classes of the retail trade. Their jerky is actually made by a private labeler, which is not known for this brand of jerky. That makes this jerky a stock recipe.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Beef, Water, Jalapeno Pepper, Salt, Sugar, Monosodium Glutamate, Paprika, Spices, Garlic, Sodium Nitrite.

Atlantic Pride Beef Jerky - Jalapeno Beef JerkyThe beef used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. Also, the beef is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to graze on grass. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.

Atlantic Pride Beef Jerky - Jalapeno Beef JerkyThe only liquid used in the marinade is boring old water.

Healthy garlic is used, which many people consider to be in the superfood group. There are also healthy spices used, which includes paprika. The heat in this flavor is achieved from the Jalapeno peppers, which are healthy if eaten in moderation.

There is no nutrition facts table provided. As a result, the exact sugar and salt levels are unknown. Based on the taste alone, the salt level would easily be over our preference of 350mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.

This jerky uses unhealthy sodium nitrite as the main preservative, apart from salt. Disappointingly, this jerky uses monosodium glutamate (MSG) outright.

Taste Review

These strips of jerky are a mixture of medium and small in size, and sliced to a medium thickness. The texture is at a good dry level, but still reasonably easy to chew. The inside of the jerky is pink, a telltale sign that sodium nitrite is used. There are almost no signs of fat, and handling this jerky leaves no oily residue on your fingers.

The first taste detected is a light level of paprika. Quickly a moderately strong saltiness takes notice, which tends to become overpowering as you eat more strips. There are also light garlic and black pepper flavors.

As for the Jalapeno flavor, it is at a light level. It is noticeable, but not all that much. On a heat scale, it would be a 2 out of 5 at most. The beef itself has a slightly processed taste, where there is not a great deal of natural beef flavor. Overall, while there is plenty of flavor, it is nothing overly special.

This 3.25 ounce/91 gram bag of jerky was purchased for $6.59. That works out to $2.03 an ounce, which rates as an average price. This jerky is not recommended from both a taste and ingredient perspective.

Alright (6/10) – Taste Rating

Bag Review

This clear, non-resealable bag has a label affixed to the front, and nothing on the back. The Atlantic Pride Beef Jerky logo appears to be a lighthouse.

Their slogan is “Your Guide to Great Taste”. There are no facts printed on this bag.

The majority of bag categories are covered. Missing is a blurb written about the flavor and jerky, a nutrition facts table, and the bag is not resealable. To the credit of Atlantic Dominion, a phone number is provided for customer inquiries.
