CopperNose – Spicy 100% Grass-Fed Beef Jerky

Saturday, December 31, 2016 Leave a Comment

CopperNose Jerky - Spicy Beef JerkyThe next review for CopperNose will focus on a 1.8 ounce/50 gram bag of their spicy flavored 100% grass-fed beef jerky. This flavor is described as being started by Agnes Coppernose in 1666, where a baker on Pudding Lane complained it was more mild than spicy. Outraged, Agnes prepared the strongest dish that she could, which in turn was so hot, it burned the wood house down. This bag was graciously submitted for review by one of the co-owners, Daniel Derry.

This CopperNose jerky brand is distributed by CopperNose Inc., located in Burford, Oxfordshire, England. The idea started with Daniels’ brother Liam in his final year at the Royal Agricultural University in 2015, where he competed, and placed runner-up in the UK Grand Idea Competition. In March 2016, they teamed up with Richard Branson from Virgin Atlantic to deliver their craft jerky both at home and abroad.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Whole slices of beef, Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Wheat, Salt), Worcestershire Sauce (Distilled Vinegar, Molasses, Corn Syrup, Water, Salt), Black Pepper, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Chili Powder, Red Pepper Flakes, Cayenne Pepper.    Allergen Warnings: Soybeans, Wheat

CopperNose Jerky - Spicy Beef JerkyCommendably, the beef used is 100% grass-fed using a British silverside cut of beef, where it can be traced back to the farm. The cattle are ethically raised, meaning no growth hormones or additional antibiotics are administered.

CopperNose Jerky - Spicy Beef JerkyThe liquid marinade is comprised of a good soy sauce, and a decent Worcestershire sauce.

CopperNose Jerky - Spicy Beef JerkyHealthy spices are used such as black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.

While there is a detailed nutrition facts table provided, it would appear that things are measured differently in Europe compared to North America. Based on the taste alone, there is little sweetness, and the salt is at a moderate level.

This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, the main preservative used is salt. Admirably, there is also no MSG added.

Excellent (10/10) – Ingredient Rating

Taste Review

These strips of beef are mostly small in size, and are sliced thick. The texture is dry, where chewing this jerky is still at a reasonable level. There are no visible signs of fat, and handling this jerky leaves no oily residue on your fingers.

You are greeted with a great balance of bold flavors here. The aroma alone is pleasant and inviting. Some of the flavors detected are soy, black pepper, onion, and garlic. Above all, there is a wonderful natural beef flavor.

The spiciness tastes great, where the sweetness beautifully counteracts the heat level without going overboard. On a heat scale, the spiciness would rate about a 2 out of 4. Overall, a spectacular flavor, where it is challenging to put the bag down.

This 1.8 ounce/50 gram bag sells online for £3.65. That works out to £2.02 an ounce, which rates as an average price. Considering that 100% grass-fed beef is used, it would more be considered a cheap price. This flavor delivers the trifecta in spades from taste, ingredient, and health perspectives, it is a treat to eat.

Excellent (10/10) – Taste Rating

Bag Review

This is a small sized, non-resealable plastic bag, with a label affixed to both the back and front. The CopperNose logo is the head of a cow, with a copper ring in its nose.

Their slogan is “A World of Flavour”. Some facts printed on this bag are “Ethically sourced British beef with animal welfare in mind”, “Low in Fat & Carbs”, “Promotes Healthy Eating”, “High in Protein”, “No preservatives”, “100% Grass Fed”, and “Supports Weight Loss”.

All bag categories are covered with this bag except that the distributor address details are not provided. There is a very good blurb printed on the back about this jerky and CopperNose. Their Facebook and Instagram handles are provided.

Good (8/10) – Bag Rating
