Tomahawk Jerky – Sweet Beef Jerky

Wednesday, December 20, 2017 Leave a Comment

Tomahawk Jerky - Sweet Beef JerkyThe next review on Tomahawk Jerky will be on a 1.4 ounce/40 gram bag of their sweet flavored beef jerky. This sweet flavor is described as a delicate blend of our original recipe spices and sauces, balanced with some subtle sweetness. The jerky bag was graciously submitted for review by one of the co-owners, Lauren Summerson.

Tomahawk Jerky is distributed by Tomahawk Jerky Pty Ltd, and is located in Kangaroo Point, Queensland, Australia. With a love of beef jerky, couples Trent & Joss Steinberg, and Brad & Lauren Summerson launched Tomahawk Jerky in September 2017. Tomahawk Jerky is advertised as using hand sliced lean cuts of local, tender Aussie beef marinated in their mix of special spices and sauces. All Tomahawk Jerky products are free from preservatives, artificial flavors and colorings, plus they are gluten-free, making their jerky a healthy snack for the entire family. A fourth flavor is in the works, and it is set to be released in 2018.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Beef, Sugar, Naturally Brewed Gluten-Free Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Rice, Salt), Garlic.    Allergen Warnings: Soy

Tomahawk Jerky - Sweet Beef JerkyThis Australian beef used here is guaranteed to be ethically raised, meaning free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. These cattle also are guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to roam about. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Very Good (9/10) rating.

Tomahawk Jerky - Sweet Beef JerkyThe only liquid marinade used here is a high quality naturally brewed gluten-free soy sauce.

Tomahawk Jerky - Sweet Beef JerkyHealthy garlic is used here. Garlic belongs to the allium family, which interestingly will heal people differently based on an individual’s needs.

Note that Australia seems to measure sugar and salt levels differently than North America based on the taste alone. The sugar level seems high at 13.5 grams of sugar per 40 grams of jerky. The salt level is high at 805mg of salt per 40 grams of jerky. Our preference is around 500mg of salt per 40 grams of jerky.

This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite added, or any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, salt is the main preservative used. Commendably, this jerky qualifies to have no MSG added.

Taste Review

Written by guest jerky reviewer Stéphane Leclerc

Your Honor: “I am guilty, I was holding the bag! …with one hand and I couldn’t keep the other hand out of the bag. I tasted the Tomahawk Sweet Beef Jerky and it is a wonderful flavor from down under.

The flavor profile is bold, simple and yet it is at the same time refined and delicate. This jerky is incredibly tasty; it has a significant tang from the soya as it cleverly conspires with a hint of sweetness and garlic. These flavors and texture are in cahoots with each other to deliver an exceptional jerky experience. It’s like a real party in your mouth and everybody’s coming!

The strips are thinly sliced and have a sumptuous crispiness. The texture is amazingly inviting and as these strips melt in your mouth, they keep you coming back for more. I really enjoy leaving a piece in the corner of my mouth and letting the jerky do it’s magic while releasing all of its flavors.

The final verdict; Your Honor, the Tomahawk Sweet Beef Jerky is a wonderfully decadent and extremely addictive guilty pleasure. I highly recommend it and rate it 10/10. …“Lock Her Up!”

A 1.40 ounce/40 gram bag sells online for $7.99. That works out to $5.70 an ounce, which rates as a very expensive price, at least compared to North America. The price gets cheaper if you order in larger quantities.

Excellent (10/10) – Taste Rating

Bag Review

This black resealable plastic bag has labels attached to both the front and back. The Tomahawk Jerky logo is two tomahawks crisscrossed.

Some slogans printed on this bag are “Taste the difference!”, “A family favourite!”, and “Subtly sweet and flavoursome”. Some facts printed on this bag are “High in Protein”, “Low in Fat”, “Gluten free”, “No artificial flavours, colours, or preservatives”, and “Handcrafted With 100% Aussie Beef”.

Some bag categories missing are a soy allergen alert, a blurb about Tomahawk Jerky or this sweet flavor, and a transparent window to view the jerky. Commendably, an email address and phone number are provided for customer inquiries.

Decent (7/10) – Bag Rating
