This will be the second review on a Lawless Jerky 2 ounce/57 gram bag of their Aloha Teriyaki flavored 100% grass-fed beef jerky. The jerky has since been reformulated, meaning the ingredient list has been tweaked, the manufacturing process changed, and a new bag design has been introduced. This jerky was kindly submitted by the Lawless Jerky Team.
Matt Tolnick, a former attorney, bravely left his law practice, and teamed up with Dan Kaplan to launch the Lawless Jerky brand name in 2013 using 100% grass-fed beef. In Matt’s words “he had the courage to run from the law..to make jerky!”. Lawless Jerky steadily grew over the next five years, reaching millions of dollars in sales. The Lawless Jerky brand name is distributed by Monogram Meat Snacks, LTD., and they are located in Memphis, Tennessee.
In Stéphane’s words to describe Lawless Jerky from his personal perspective: “Indeed, I paid attention to their new product and Lady Lawless new design. I really like Lawless Craft Jerky and I have great respect for Matt and his company. I still remember the moment you first told me about them, I immediately became interested and I knew he had something special going on. I believe Matt is really smart and his success is solely due to his creativity, innovation, his passion and hard work. He pays much attention to every little detail. It is clear to me, he’s a perfectionist and he has a clear vision of where he is leading his company.”
“I know the jerky market is tough and I have no doubts, he’ll make it in a big way. This captivates me and this is why I enjoy paying attention to every little detail, change and transformation etc. such a company and person goes through. I strongly believe to be successful we ought to study success, Matt and Lawless Jerky are great examples.”
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Grass-Fed Beef, Sugar, Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Rice, Salt), Beef Broth. Contains 2% or Less of Pineapple Juice Concentrate, Natural Flavors. Allergen Warnings: Soy
Lawless Jerky is guaranteed to use 100% grass-fed beef. As a result, the cattle are guaranteed to have free range access, and be ethically raised.
For a detailed explanation on the virtues of consuming 100% grass-fed beef compared to grain-fed beef, you can read the Just How Natural is Your “All-Natural” Beef Jerky?” article written by Matt.
The liquid marinade is comprised of a good gluten-free soy sauce, healthy beef broth, and a small amount of healthy pineapple juice concentrate. Beef broth is bones boiled in water that contains many minerals, among other healthy things.
The sugar level is around 4-5 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky, which is our upper sugar limit for a sweet based flavor as we have here. The salt level is acceptable at around 270mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.
This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite used, or any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, salt is the main preservative used. Admirably, this jerky qualifies to have no MSG added.

Taste Review
Written by guest jerky reviewer Stéphane Leclerc
These strips of jerky are mainly medium in size, and sliced to a medium thickness. The texture is more on the soft and tender side and reasonably easy to chew.
Paul and Mark had the following to say about this jerky: “While there is some sort of fragrance present, I cannot really identify the aroma.”
This jerky is ripe with an abundance of tastes that jump out at you. I taste salt, sweet, soy, garlic, light onion and an abundance of natural beef. The teriyaki flavor is not as noticeable as it maybe should be.
As expected for a teriyaki flavor, the sweetness is certainly noticeable, but thankfully does not go overboard. Absent is an Asian tasting flair with this teriyaki flavor, such as wine, pineapple or ginger. For the record pineapple juice concentrate is a listed ingredient, but I cannot pick up on the taste. Perhaps more pineapple juice concentrate is needed.
On the other hand, I’ve personally noticed some strips are thicker than others and this rustic way of slicing the meat provides a fun and interesting texture and flavor. I find myself having some preferences and then seeking some particular strips. I do enjoy this way of slicing the meat much like one may prefer “Red Smarties” and others may prefer the “Blue Smarties” or anything in between. Although, this Lawless Jerky Aloha Teriyaki 100% Grass Fed Beef Jerky is generally good and tasty, I prefer a more traditional Teriyaki flavor with perhaps an added splash of mirin and some acidity to help the flavor “POP” while defining and accentuating the flavor profile.
Overall, Mark concluded this flavor is pleasant tasting and mildly addictive. You just get the feeling that something is missing with this flavor. This jerky was given 8/10 taste rating.
A 2 ounce/57 gram bag sells online for $5.99. That works out to $3.00 an ounce, which rates as an upper limit average price. Free shipping is offered on orders over $50.
Bag Review
Unusually, this bag opens vertically, as opposed to horizontally. Also unusual is that while this bag is made of plastic, it has a feel similar to paper or dull sandpaper. Everything is imprinted directly on this resealable bag, both on the front and back.
The Lawless Jerky slogan “A Braver Flavor” is displayed on the front, cleverly situated under “Tear Here For”. Another slogan printed is “America’s Craft Jerky Looks Forward To Meating You”.
Some facts printed on this bag are “23g Protein Per Serving”, “Handcrafted”, “100% Grass-Fed”, “All Natural”, “Gluten Free”, “Minimally Processed”, and “No Artificial Ingredients”.
The only bag category missing is a transparent window to view the actual jerky. There is a great blurb printed on the back written by Matt about Lawless Jerky. You are encouraged to follow Lawless Jerky on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Commendably, Lawless Jerky offers a toll free phone number for customer inquiries.
