Jax Beef Jerky – Teriyaki Beef Jerky

Saturday, January 12, 2019 2 Comments

Jax Beef Jerky - Teriyaki Beef JerkyJax Snax Foods Inc. is a family owned business that launched in 2011. Things are done a little differently with Jax Snax Foods Inc., where there is no fooling around. They currently only sell a whopping 15 ounce bag of jerky, which is 425.24 grams. Only serious jerky lovers needed here. Each bag contains 15 humongous, tasty original flavored Jax Beef Jerky slabs. Note that there are plans in place to offer a 70 gram bag in the near future, plus introduce some new flavors. The jerky is advertised to use 100% high grade whole muscle beef. Jax Beef Jerky is currently sold in Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Ontario. Jax Beef Jerky is distributed by Jax Snax Food Inc., and they are located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The next review on Jax Beef Jerky will focus on a 15 ounce/425.24 gram bag of their teriyaki flavored beef jerky. This teriyaki flavor is advertised as a great tasting combination of spices and beef with a hickory smoked flavor. The bag was kindly submitted for review by the owner, Mak.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Beef, Sugar, Water, Pineapple Juice, Vinegar, Soy Sauce (Water, Wheat, Soy Beans, Salt, Sodium Benzoate), Salt, Garlic Powder, Liquid Smoke, Sodium Nitrite.    Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat

Jax Beef Jerky - Teriyaki Beef JerkyThe beef used is guaranteed to have been raised ethically, meaning not administered growth hormones or additional antibiotics. This beef is also guaranteed to have at least partial free range to roam about as nature intended. As a result, the highest ingredient rating possible is Very Good (9/10).

The liquid marinade is comprised of water, healthy pineapple juice, super healthy vinegar, an average soy sauce, and liquid smoke.

The sugar level is on the high side at 7 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference is 3 grams of sugar or less per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is decent at 270mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.

This jerky does not qualify to have no sodium nitrite, as sodium nitrite is used outright as a preservative to lose a rating. This is not surprising with such a large quantity of jerky in one bag. Commendably, this jerky has no MSG added.

Decent (7/10) – Ingredient Rating

Taste Review

Written by guest jerky reviewer Stéphane Leclerc

The Jax Teriyaki Beef Jerky has a classic Teriyaki taste with soy, garlic, some sweetness and smokiness and what seems to be a little pineapple juice. As a teriyaki flavor, the sweetness is within reason without going overboard and it is still loaded with good beef flavor.

The flavor profile is primarily composed of saltiness, a juicy sweetness and some great natural beef flavor. These strips or mighty slabs of beef, as they are called by Jax Beef Jerky are large in size and sliced almost paper thin. The texture is dry and somewhat leathery with small stringy gristle. These can be challenging to chew and it may require a reasonable amount of chewing action. While I would normally get turned off by the gristle, one could however debate that they are necessary to this jerky.

These mighty slabs are quite large and the fibers in the meat do create some beautiful and interesting patterns. These big sheets of meat are so pretty, I call them “A succulent work of Art” and other time a “Delicious Master Piece”. There are no doubts: Picasso and DaVinci would have been mighty proud and delighted, if only they had come up with this idea.

As a bonus, this also makes the process of ripping the jerky into smaller pieces and eating them a more fun and interesting adventure.

Mark and I enjoyed this jerky a great deal and we were much more favorable towards this awesome Jax Teriyaki Beef Jerky. I absolutely love these mighty Teriyaki slabs and I believe it may be attributed to the fact that I ate approximately half a pound in about two minutes.

This method of sampling jerky like an industrial vacuum cleaner and wolfing down my jerky likely compounded and intensified all the flavors. I taste the beef, Teriyaki, soy, garlic and smoke in spades. The beef was really tasty and all the flavors were well balanced.

Mark said about Jax Beef Jerky “This teriyaki flavor tends to grow on me. Unlike the original flavor, which I found very addictive, this teriyaki flavor is somewhat addictive”.

Some may have minor issues and complaints but overall, this is a great jerky treat with a solid Teriyaki flavor. The Teriyaki flavor is authentic without distracting or destroying the taste of beef and this is what real jerky is all about.

We’ve awarded this flavor a Very Good (9/10) taste rating. Cheers!

This 15 ounce/425.24 gram bag of jerky sells online for $39.95. That works out to $2.66 an ounce, which rates as an average price.

Bag Review

This clear, large plastic bag has a label on the front, and nothing on the back. For such a large quantity of jerky, it is surprising to see that this bag is not resealable. As per Canadian law, French translations are provided.

There are no slogans printed on this bag. The only facts printed on this bag are “Smoke Flavor Added”, and “Product of U.S.A.”

The only other missing bag categories are no soy/wheat allergen alerts are printed, and a blurb not printed about Jax Beef Jerky or this teriyaki flavor. Admirably, a toll free number is provided for customer inquiries.

Alright (6/10) – Bag Rating

      Hi Irena,

We are sorry to hear that you didn’t get our Jax Beef Jerky. Your online order was received on July 29th and was processed the next day, and a Canada post tracking number was sent to your email (I can’t share here but will send it to your email shortly and will attach the original shipping receipt ). You specified 2 addresses on your order and we shipped it to the “shipping address” you entered, we just checked the Canada post tracking and it shows that the package is being sent back because your address is not correct (or a forward address is not correct) as you can check in the online tracking system.

Please reply to our email that we will send shortly and provide a new or corrected shipping address to send you your package, and as we understand your frustration waiting for our famous Jax Beef Jerky we will send you free packs of our new individual Jax Jerky, including our new HOT flavour.

Apologies again for the inconvenience, rather though it wasn’t our fault 🙂

      Kind Regards
      Mak
