The first review for Savage Jerky Co. will be on a 3 ounce/85 gram bag of their mojo habanero flavored beef jerky. This bag was kindly submitted for review by the Savage Jerky Co. team.
The Savage Jerky Co. brand name was launched in 2014. They are located in Lawrenceville, Georgia. On a road trip in the summer of 2013, the owners Brad and Michelle Summey were disappointed with the jerky selection at gas stations. In their words: “full of the same mediocre, dry and often bland varieties of beef jerky”. Less than a year later Savage Jerky Co. was selling four different flavors of beef jerky. Today, they sell seven different flavors. Their jerky is advertised as natural, and hand crafted, which has a unique flavor.
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Lime Juice, Water, Orange Juice, Lemon Juice, Molasses, Sea Salt, Brown Sugar, Garlic, Onion, Black Pepper, Powdered Garlic, Cilantro, Coriander, Oregano, Cayenne Pepper, Habanero Pepper, Paprika, Chipotle Morita Powder, Cayenne Pepper, Cumin, Turmeric.
The beef used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. Also, the beef is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to graze on grass. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.
We have an interesting citrus based liquid marinade consisting of lime juice, water, orange juice, and lemon juice. Juices are decent, but overrated on how healthy they are.
The heat comes from the cayenne pepper, habanero pepper, and chipotle morita powder. As a general rule, hot peppers are healthy if eaten in moderation, to flush toxins out of your body.
Garlic and onion offer many health benefits. Many of the best spices in the world are used here. The most interesting spice used is oregano, which contains many essential vitamins.
The sugar level used here is highly respectable at only 1 gram of sugar per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is also quite respectable at 150mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.
This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservative. It is great to see that mineral rich sea salt is used as the main preservative, as opposed to highly refined table salt. Also admirably, there is no MSG added.

Taste Review
These jerky strips are medium in size, and sliced to a medium thickness. There is a dry texture, but not overly dry. The texture is about perfect, and relatively easy to chew. There are no visible signs of fat, and handling this jerky leaves no residue on your fingers. The strips are visibly coated with spices.
The first taste detected is the lime juice. Quickly, the heat level starts to set in. On the bag itself, this mojo habanero flavor is advertised to have a heat level of 3/4. It is at least that, where a 4/5 may be a more accurate level. However, the tanginess from the juices manages to offset some of the heat in a great way.
There are actually a surprisingly wide array of flavors here. The oregano turns out to be a terrific choice on jerky, which adds a well defined flavor. This jerky is moderately salty, and only mildly sweet tasting. Overall, this is one of the tastiest, and interesting hot based flavors reviewed to date.
This 3 ounce/85 gram bag sells online for $7.99. That works out to $2.67 an ounce, which rates as an expensive price. One bonus is that shipping within the U.S.A. is only $4.99. True to their word, this jerky does have a unique flavor, and is anything but mediocre or bland tasting. This jerky is absolutely worth your money for people who enjoy a hot flavored jerky.

Bag Review
While not a commonly used bag, this is a standard resealable bag. On the front there is a label affixed, and something imprinted on the back.
The Savage Jerky Co. logo is a silhouette of a bearded man (savage). Their slogans are “Hand-Crafted” and “Small Batch”.
There are some bag categories missing. There is no blurb printed about Savage Jerky Co., and the mojo habanero flavor. Also missing are no distributor address details provided, and the jerky weight is not stated in grams.
