In December 2013, while visiting Phillipsburgh, New Jersey, I purchased a 1.5 ounce/42 gram bag of Strollo’s beef jerky. Phillipsburgh, New Jersey is located near the Pennsylvania state border. This review will focus on Strollo’s garlic flavored jerky.
The Strollo’s brand name of jerky is manufactured and distributed by Strollo’s Homemade Beef Jerky, located in Eatontown, New Jersey. Strollo’s Homemade Beef Jerky makes their jerky in small batches, to ensure the highest level of freshness and quality. Their jerky does not have any extra additives, preservatives or fillers. The sodium content is fairly low, and this jerky has no sugar added.
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Contains Lean Beef, Garlic, Soy Sauce (Water, Wheat, Soybeans, Salt, Sodium Benzoate {preservative}),Water, Teriyaki Sauce (Brewed Soy Sauce)(Wheat, Soybeans, Salt), Wine, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Water, Vinegar, Salt, Spices, Onion Powder, Succinic Acid, Garlic Powder, Sodium Benzoate {preservative}, Liquid Smoke (Water, Natural Smoke Flavor, Vinegar, Molasses, Caramel Color). Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat
The beef used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. Also, the beef is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to graze on grass. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.
The liquid marinade consists of an average soy sauce, a poor teriyaki sauce, and liquid smoke. It is unfortunate to see that the highly processed unhealthy sweetener high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is used in the teriyaki sauce.
Being a garlic flavor, it’s great to see that garlic is listed second in the ingredient list by weight. Garlic is a super healthy vegetable with multiple health benefits, including antibacterial and antifungal properties.
It does not get any better than having 0 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is extremely low at only 65mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.
As advertised, this jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, salt is the main preservative, and vinegar to a lesser extent.
Decent (7/10) – Ingredient Rating
Taste Review
Note: For a recent, live taste review, open Strollo’s – Garlic Beef Jerky (Recipe #3).
The strips of jerky were medium to thin in thickness. For the most part, the slices of jerky were somewhat large. As for the jerky texture, it was very dry.
Being a garlic flavor jerky, you would expect the taste of garlic to be prominent. Instead, I found the garlic taste to be mild. The smoke flavor is detectable, as was the teriyaki sauce and soy sauce. As advertised, there is no hint of sweetness whatsoever in this jerky, which really allows the natural beef flavor to shine through.
I paid $4.99 for this 1.5 ounce/42 gram bag of jerky. That works out to $3.33 an ounce, which rates as an expensive price. The price per ounce would be lower if you buy this jerky in bulk, with a 6 or 12 pack, which works out to be approximately $2.67 an ounce. This jerky is certainly recommended as worth your money.
Bag Review
We have a standard, clear, resealable plastic bag here. A label is affixed to the front, and nothing on the back. The ‘best before date’ is interesting, all 12 months are printed on the bag, where somebody used a black marker to cross off the month when this jerky will start to expire.
The Strollo’s logo is interesting. It has a mean, muscular looking cow, who has just beat somebody senseless, where the baseball cap on the ground states ‘Competitor’. The slogan for their jerky is “Our Meat Can’t Be Beat”. Some facts printed on this bag are “Homemade Recipe” and “Smoke Flavor Added”.
All the important bag categories are covered. Missing is a blurb about this brand and flavor, but there is no room.
