koH Jerky – Spicy Beef Jerky

Wednesday, July 26, 2017 Leave a Comment

koH Jerky - Spicy Beef JerkyThe first review for koH Jerky will focus on a 4 ounce/113 gram bag of their spicy flavored beef jerky. This jerky is described as being a bold tasting Vietnamese flavor with a secondary level of spiciness. The jerky was kindly submitted for review by the owner, Phuc Huynh (Fook Win).

This koH Jerky brand name is located in Las Vegas, Nevada, and is distributed under the same name of koH Jerky. Phuc started making beef jerky as a hobby for six years, where in June 2017, the koH Jerky brand name was officially launched. The Vietnamese word “khô” essentially means dried. The letter H is capitalized for Phuc’s last name Huynh. Phuc describes this jerky as not being your typical jerky, where you would immediately notice the difference compared to mass produced jerky. There are currently three flavors available, offering three different levels of spiciness. More flavors are planned in the future.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Beef, Chili Pepper, Fish Extract, Sesame Oil, Canola Oil, Sugar, Salt, Garlic, Lemongrass.    Allergen Warnings: Sesame, Anchovies

koH Jerky - Spicy Beef JerkyThe beef used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. Also, the beef is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to graze on grass. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.

koH Jerky - Spicy Beef JerkyThe liquid marinade is comprised of fish extract, healthy sesame oil, and canola oil. This anchovy Fish extract is believed to offer health benefits.

Healthy garlic and the plant lemongrass are used. The heat is achieved from the hot chili peppers. Spicy foods are healthy if eaten in moderation, which flushes toxins out of the body.

No nutrition facts table is provided. As a result, the exact sugar and salt levels are unknown.

This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, the main preservative used is salt. Admirably, there is no MSG added.

Taste Review

These strips of jerky are small to medium in size, and are sliced to a medium thickness. The texture is sort of soft and tender, being relatively easy to chew. There are no signs of fat. Handling this jerky leaves a considerable amount of oily residue on your fingers, have a paper towel ready.

Right away you recognize a bold, distinct Asian flavor. The fishy flavor from the fish extract is noticeable, but it does not go overboard. Moderate levels of black pepper and salt stand out, perhaps too much, especially the black pepper. Blended in is the fantastic combination of sesame oil and garlic.

The spiciness starts off quickly, and gradually increases. On a heat scale, the heat levels off at a 3 out of 5, with a solid bite. A mild level of sweetness is present throughout. Overall, this flavor absolutely delivers in being Asian tasting with a good level of heat.

A 4 ounce/113 gram bag sells online for $15.00. That works out to $3.75 an ounce, which rates as an expensive price. The price is cheaper if you order 8 or 16 ounces. Free shipping is offered. This flavor is highly recommended if you would enjoy a very bold tasting Asian flavor with a good level of spiciness.

Excellent (10/10) – Taste Rating

Bag Review

This clear, resealable plastic bag has a label affixed to the front, and nothing on the back. The koH Jerky logo has a flame above the letter ‘o’ in the word koH. Commendably, this bag is vacuum sealed, the best way to keep jerky fresh tasting.

There are no slogans or facts printed on the label.

A number of bag categories are missing such as sesame & anchovy allergen alerts, jerky weight not stated in grams, USDA inspected logo, nutrition facts table, bar code, ingredient list, and a blurb about this jerky or flavor. The @kohjery Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram handle is provided. To the credit of koH Jerky, an email address is displayed for customer inquiries.

Fair (4/10) – Bag Rating
