It is a generally accepted story that an ancient South American Inca tribe called the Quechua first made jerky (“ch’arki”) as early as the 1500’s. Halal Mummified Jerky blows that theory away, where it is well documented that jerky was made thousands of years ago by ancient Egyptians. Archaeologists made this discovery when they found dried foods preserved in tombs. Tutankhamen, King Tut had about 40 boxes of meat and poultry in his tomb. Halal Mummified Jerky is 100% made in the USA, and their beef is certified to be halal by Halal Transactions of Omaha. Halal Mummified Jerky is distributed by Timeline Trading, and they are located in Bellevue, Washington.
The next review on Halal Mummified Jerky will be on a 2.5 ounce/70 gram bag of their Desert Jalapenos flavored halal beef jerky. Halal means food that is allowed for consumption under Islamic dietary guidelines. The aim is for a Muslim to slaughter the animal, limiting the amount of pain the animal will endure. The jerky bag was graciously submitted for review by the owner Ahmed Kamel.

Ingredients: Beef, Soy Sauce (Water, Wheat, Soy Beans, Salt), Water, Brown Sugar, Worcestershire Sauce (Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Distilled Vinegar, Worcestershire Sauce Base (Distilled Vinegar, Molasses, Corn Syrup, Water, Salt, Caramel Color, Garlic Powder, Sugar, Spices, Tamarind, Natural Flavor, Sulfiting Agent), Salt, Citric Acid), Black Pepper, Natural Smoke Flavor (Water, Natural Hickory Smoke Concentrate), Jalapeno Powder, Crushed Red Peppers, Cayenne Powder, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Citric Acid. Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat
The beef used here is guaranteed to be ethically raised, meaning free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. These cattle are not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to roam about. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Very Good (9/10) rating.
The liquid marinade here consists of a decent soy sauce, a not so good Worcestershire sauce, water, and a liquid natural hickory smoke. It is disappointing to see that the unhealthy sweetener high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is used in the Worcestershire sauce to lose a rating.
The spiciness is achieved from the jalapeno powder, crushed red chili peppers, and cayenne powder. Hot peppers are healthy if eaten in moderation, which flush toxins out of the body.
The sugar level is respectable at 2 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is on the lower side at 240mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.
This jerky qualifies to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservative. Instead, salt is the main preservative used. To a lesser degree citric acid acts as a preservative. With more kudos to Halal Mummified Jerky, this jerky has no MSG added.

Taste Review
Written by guest jerky reviewer Stéphane Leclerc
The spiciness of this Halal Mummified Jerky Desert Jalapeño Beef Jerky is rather kicked up and most noticeable. The heat is followed with mild levels of sweet and saltiness, black pepper and garlic with a good ratio of soy and Worcestershire sauce.
The heat level quickly increases and after a few strips, the spiciness easily jumps to 3/5 and perhaps 4/5 on the heat scale. While some may enjoy this level of heat, it may easily become overwhelming or unpleasant to others. This level of spiciness is definitely too spicy for a Jalapeño based flavor and especially as there is no mention or warning on the bag. Typically, a Jalapeño flavor should not exceed 2/5 on the heat scale. We’ve also disappointingly noticed the lack or absence of natural Jalapeño flavor. This is however substituted with a generous amount of red pepper flakes and Cayenne. There is some natural beef flavor present and the smoked flavor somehow got lost somewhere down the spicy avenue.
Mark felt that “apart from the heat, this jerky is bursting with flavor and it is anything but boring tasting. As with all Halal Mummified Jerky flavors reviewed to date, they all tend to be on the bold side. I am thoroughly enjoying this flavor and am struggling not to finish the bag off so soon”.
These strips are medium in size and they are sliced to a medium thickness. The texture is between soft and dry and it requires a reasonable effort to chew. This jerky does deliver on texture and it is very pleasing on the chew factor.
Paul was enthusiastically favorable and said: “Well done Mummified, you’ve really hit it out of the yard with the spicy heat. It’s been a while since I encountered a flavor of jerky this spicy. I would put it at 3.5 to maybe even a 4/5 on the spice scale. But darn, ridiculously tasty! Mummified, my mouth is on fire, for all the right reasons. I can’t think of a better reason to sweat my A$$ off. A very, very, very enthusiastic two thumbs way, way, way up.
On these last few notes, I’d like to take this opportunity and say: We at Jerky Ingredients.com always aim to write accurate, fair and objective taste reviews. We take our reputation seriously and all our readers and jerky makers came to expect nothing less from us.
This jerky treat is tasty, addictive and all seasonings contribute well together and ultimately explode into an overall wonderful flavor profile. However, we have to follow our own rules, process and criteria. We did notice the following technicalities worth noting, this beef jerky is very hot and spicy, there is a lack of Jalapeños flavor and there are discrepancies in the level of heat between strips.
We’d simply recommend this flavor to people who can handle extra hot tasting jerky and we’ve awarded a Good 8/10 taste rating. Cheers!
A 2.5 ounce/70.9 gram bag of jerky sells online for $6.50, which works out to $2.60 an ounce. That would rate as an average price.
Bag Review
This resealable plastic bag has a label affixed to the front, and nothing on the back. The Halal Mummified Jerky logo is a cow wrapped up as a mummy. Random hieroglyphics line the borders of this label.
The Halal Mummified Jerky slogan is “The Oldest Jerky On Earth”. Some facts printed on this bag are “18g Protein Per Package”, “12.5g Sugar Per Package”, “Gluten Free”, “Premium Halal Blood Drained Meats”, “No Added Nitrates or Nitrites”, “No Added MSG”, “Made in USA”, and “Hand Slaughtered Blood Drained Halal”.
The only missing bag categories are the jerky weight is not stated in grams, and a soy allergen alert. A halal certified symbol is printed on the bag.
