Taste Review
OVERLAND MEAT & SEAFOOD COMPANY – ORIGINAL BEEF JERKY
Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker
When I open the bag I smell what I believe to be vinegar. The pieces are medium to large in size, and they are sliced to a medium thickness. The jerky is moist, leaving an oily residue on your fingers. The jerky is too soft for my liking, but let’s forge on to attempt to give it a fair shake.
When I bite into the jerky I taste mild salt, medium sweet, mild garlic, and possibly light onion. When I tried it yesterday, I tasted something I didn’t like, but I don’t taste it now. This jerky is by no means blowing me away, but it is not bad. I do taste the vinegar I stated earlier, but it is also well within reason.
This jerky is better than pedestrian, but it still is not carrying the day. An 8/10 seems to be the most accurate assessment of this flavor of jerky.
Here is what Mark had to say about this Original beef jerky flavor from Overland Meat & Seafood Company: “Thanks Paul for the straightforward taste review. I more or less experienced a similar experience. On the first bite I was not all that impressed. However, as I consumed more strips, this jerky flavor grew on me. This original flavor has a standard taste profile of soy, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and teriyaki sauce that is common among many original flavors.”
“Paul and I are at a unanimous Good (8/10) taste rating. However, this jerky deserves further mention. The quality of beef used from Oregon Country Beef is top notch. To top it off, this jerky sells for only $2.50 an ounce. Given the superior quality of beef used, this jerky from Overland Meat & Seafood Company is among the best reviewed. It is not hard to see why Overland Meat & Seafood Company was voted the top-rated butcher shop in Tahoe for ten years, where I wish I had an Overland Meat & Seafood Company in my city.”
This 4 ounce/113 gram bag of jerky sells for $10.00, which equates to $2.50 an ounce. That rates as a cheap price.
Bag Review
This clear, non-resealable plastic bag has a label affixed to the front and nothing on the back. This bag is vacuum sealed, which is the best way to keep the jerky fresh and tasting.
A slogan printed on this bag could be “Serving So. Lake Taho Since 1987”. Some facts printed are “Homemade Beef Jerky”, “No Hormones”, and “No Antibiotics”.
Some missing bag categories are a blurb about Overland Meat & Seafood Company or this flavor, the jerky weight, a barcode, a nutrition facts table, a best before date, jerky weight, and allergen alerts.
