Nordic Snack – Dried Cod Bites

Monday, March 10, 2025 Leave a Comment

Nordic Snack - Dried Cod BitesLaunched in 2022, Nordic Snack offers cod jerky (referred to as dried cod bites), a high-protein, nutrient-rich take on Iceland’s traditional harðfiskur. These freeze-dried bites are made from 100% wild-caught Icelandic cod fillets and retain their natural freshness and essential nutrients, including Vitamin B12, iodine, magnesium, phosphorus, niacin, folic acid, and selenium. With an impressive 84% protein content, they are gluten-free, keto-friendly, and contain only two ingredients—dried cod and sea salt—free from preservatives or artificial additives.

The freeze-drying process ensures a long shelf life without refrigeration, making them a convenient, on-the-go snack. Traditionally enjoyed in Iceland with soft butter, these cod bites can also be paired with lemon juice, hot sauce, or seasonings for added flavor. Nordic Snack ships their Dried Cod Bites across the USA with free shipping on all orders. This Nordic Snack jerky brand is distributed under the name of Nordic Catch, LLC, located in Los Angeles, California. The jerky is manufactured by Von Hardfiskverkun, located in Capital Area, Iceland.

The first review on Nordic Snack will focus on a 1.2 ounce/35 gram bag of their Original flavored dried cod bites. This flavor is described as having salt, zero sugar, and zero preservatives. The bag was purchased online from Amazon.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Dried Cod (99.2%), Salt.

Nordic Snack - Dried Cod BitesCod is a nutritious, lean fish that is rich in high-quality protein. Low in fat, cod provides essential omega-3 fatty acids, an excellent source of B vitamins, particularly B12 and iodine. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is an Excellent (10/10) rating.

Nordic Snack - Dried Cod BitesThere is no liquid marinade used. Some people call this a dry rub or old fashioned jerky.

No healthy ingredients are added as just cod and salt used, where their website states that healthy, minimally processed Icelandic sea salt is used.

The sugar level is perfect at 0 grams of sugar per 35 grams. The salt level is acceptable at 280mg of salt per 35 grams of jerky.

This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite. Instead, salt is the main preservative. Commendably, this jerky does qualify to have no MSG added.

NORDIC SNACK – DRIED COD BITES

Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker

When I open the bag I immediately smell an intense fish odor, and nothing else. The “bites” look almost exactly like nachos. Same size, basically the same thickness.

When I bite into the “bites”, I taste salt, at a pretty high level, which I happen to like, next to no sweet, nor much of anything else. Just salt and cod. Which, to me, is not a bad thing. These “bites” are actually rather tasty, a very healthy late-night snack. I would rate this snack as a 9/10.

The Nordic Snack – Dried Cod Bites is delicious. The cod has a fantastic texture, and as expected, it varies slightly between bites. This freeze-dried method is ingenious. It preserves the great taste of the fish while creating a pleasant crispiness in each bite.

The seasoning is simple and has a perfect level of saltiness. I’ve enjoyed these cod bites from the very start, and it kept growing with each following bite. The flavor profile has richness and complexity, and it is highly addictive.

Although the Nordic Snack – Dried Cod Bites are wonderful, I’d be curious to taste a variation with a splash of acidity, such as lemon juice or vinegar, and a hint of ginger. This would likely add a “Pop” of flavor and freshness while lowering the “fishiness” in the event it may be an issue for some folks.

I’ve enjoyed each and every bite. This is a delicious and healthy snack. The texture is excellent and addictive. I rate this great snack a 10/10 Taste Rating. A+

This 1.2 ounce/35 gram bag sells online for $10.49. That works out to $8.74 an ounce, which rates as an expensive price.

Bag Review

This black resealable plastic bag has everything printed imprinted on both the front and back. There is an illustration of a cod on the front with the Iceland flag stripes in it.

A slogan printed on this bag could be “A Super Food”. Some facts printed on this bag are “84% Protein”, “Traditional Icelandic Heath Snack”, “Made from Wild Cod, Dried to a Soft Bite”, Natural Product”, “Gluten Free”, “0.5% Fat”, “0g Carbs”, “29g Protein”, “121 Kcal”, “HACCP Quality Control”, and “IS A408 EFTA”.

All bag categories are covered. Two good blurbs about this flavor and cod jerky are printed on the back. Commendably, an email address and phone number are provided for customer inquiries. You are encouraged to follow Nordic Snack with their @noridiccatch handle on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
