Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Soy Sauce (Water, Wheat, Soybeans, Salt, Sodium Benzoate less than 1/10 of 1% as a preservative), Mango Habanero Sauce (Water, Sugar, Fruit Puree (Mango, Pineapple, Pear, Apple, Passionfruit, Plum), Salt, Modified Food Starch, Distilled Vinegar, Habanero Powder, Spices, Citrus Fiber, Carrot Color, Paprika Oleoresin), Mango Syrup, Fructose, Mango Juice, Sugar, Malic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Mango Flavor, Acesulfame Potassium, Potassium Sorbate, FD&C Yellow #5), Jalapeno, Habanero Powder, Garlic, Onion, Sodium Nitrite. Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat
Sierra Madre Provision Co. uses ranch raised beef, which means the cattle have free range access to graze on grass. The cattle are also ethically raised, meaning that the cows receive no growth hormones or additional antibiotics. As a result, the ingredient rating starts at a Very Good (9/10) rating.
The liquid marinade used here contains an average brand of soy sauce and a not so healthy brand of mango habanero sauce.
Some healthy ingredients added are onion and garlic. The heat is achieved from jalapeno peppers and habanero powder, where hot peppers are healthy if eaten in moderation, which flushes toxins out of the body.
The super unhealthy artificial color FD&C yellow #5 is used in the mango habanero sauce to lose a rating.
The sugar level is a little high at 6 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference for a hot based flavor, as we have here, is 4 grams of sugar or less. The salt level is reasonable at 280mg of salt per 28 grams.
This jerky does not qualify to be sodium nitrite free, as sodium nitrite is used outright as a preservative to lose a rating. Admirably, this jerky does qualify to have no MSG added.

SIERRA MADRE PROVISIONS CO. – MANGO HABANERO BEEF JERKY
Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker
When I open the bag I smell a fruity smell, maybe the mango, and not much else. The jerky consists of one large strip. The jerky strip is soft and somewhat moist, not like our forefathers intended. There is a slight oily residue left on your fingertips.
When I bite into the jerky I taste salt, at a good level, sweet, a bit too intense for my liking, but within reason. I taste mild garlic, mild pepper, and possibly a slight onion flavor. I am definitely picking up on the heat from the habanero, it is strong, but not insane. I also detect the mango. It is prominent, kind of reminiscent of the mango smell as I opened the bag.
This jerky lacks the “WOW” factor, but it is good enough to award an 8.5/10, but round up to a 9/10.
Here is what Mark had to say about this Mango Habanero beef jerky flavor from Sierra Madre Provision Co. “Thanks Paul for the positive taste review. We have some disagreements here. The texture is not soft, nor is it the most rigid texture that we have tried. Let’s say in between. There is sweetness present, but it is by no means overbearing. We both agree that the heat from the habanero is at a reasonable level, with a light, familiar burn you get with habanero peppers. The heat would rate at about a 2 out of 4 on the heat scale.”
“The flavor of mango is at a discernible light to mild level, but by no means strong tasting. The familiar taste of soy blends in well along with various spices. If I had done this taste test blindfolded, I likely would have correctly guessed that this was a Mango Habanero flavor. I do not agree with Paul that there is no ‘wow’ factor. There is some, but it’s not off the charts. I had difficulty not finishing off my portion in one sitting. A unanimous Very Good (9/10) taste rating will be awarded.”
This 3 ounce/85 gram bag sells online for $7.99, which works out to $2.65 an ounce. That rates as a cheap price. Free shipping is offered on orders over $49.99.

Bag Review
This is a relatively tall, resealable bag. The front is gold, and the back is silver, with nothing on the back. A label is affixed to the front, but nothing is on the back. The scenic picture on this bag depicts mountains, including a few California palm trees.
There are no slogans or facts printed on this bag.
Some missing bag categories are a blurb about Sierra Madre Provision Co., and a missing sesame allergen alert. Kudos to Sierra Madre Provision Co., where they provide a toll-free phone number for customer inquiries.
