Ingredient Review
100% Grass-Fed Beef and Grass Finished Beef, Water, Organic Coconut Sugar, Sea Salt, Organic Garlic, Organic Matcha Tea, Organic Ginger, Organic Cardamom.
The beef used is 100% grass-fed beef sourced from Supply Background located in New Zealand. As a result, the cattle are guaranteed to have free range access to roam about. The beef is guaranteed to have been raised ethically, meaning not administered growth hormones or additional antibiotics. As a result, the highest ingredient rating possible is Excellent (10/10).
The liquid marinade is comprised of just water.
There are some healthy ingredients added such as organic garlic, organic matcha tea, organic ginger, and organic cardamom
The sugar level is at bit high at 4 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference is 3 grams of sugar or less per 28 grams of jerky, albeit coconut sugar is used that has the lowest glycemic index for types of sugars. The salt level is respectable at 280mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky, which uses healthy minimally processed sea salt.
This jerky qualifies to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservative. With more kudos to PREVAIL Jerky, this jerky has no MSG added.
Very Good (9/10) – Ingredient Rating
Taste Review
PREVAIL JERKY- ORIGINAL 100% GRASS-FED BEEF JERKY
Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker
When I open the bag, I smell something unfamiliar. The jerky is relatively small in size, and it is sliced rather thin. It is soft and dry, and it leaves no oily residue on your fingers.
The first flavors I encounter are light salt, a little too much sugar. While not too sweet, it could stand to have the sugar content dialed down a bit. I believe I detect faint garlic and onion in the background, along with a smidgen of natural beef.
This flavor is unfortunately coming across as quite nondescript, very run-of-the-mill and not awe inspiring.
We here cannot dispute that this flavor seems to be quite healthy, but it cannot be disputed that this flavor seems more to be ‘filler’ than ‘killer’, more Jack Link’s than genuine craft jerky.
This jerky is okay, not great, not blow-me-away, not tasting very much at all as ‘more’, maybe I’ll be generous and rate this jerky a 7/10. I really can’t talk myself into any higher of a rating. Gentlemen?
Here is what Stéphane had to say: “I am with Paul on this one. I really wanted to like the Prevail Original Beef Jerky but the flavor is nondescript. I find this jerky mostly sweet and the other flavors are too light to really make a statement or promote an enjoyable flavor profile.”
“In my own opinion, this jerky is arguably too sweet to be considered an Original flavor. The taste of beef comes across and again very lightly.”
“The Prevail Original Beef Jerky is nothing to shake a stick at, I am not blown away by any stretch of the imagination and this jerky is easily forgettable. I could not award anything above a 7/10 taste rating and I’d be fine with less.”
Here is what Mark had to say about this original beef jerky flavor from PREVAIL Jerky: “Thanks Paul and Stéphane for the honest taste reviews. I share the same sentiments as Stéphane and Paul. With an original based flavor as we have here, the natural beef flavor is supposed to be the star of the show. Instead, the natural beef is mostly masked due to guessing the organic coconut sugar or organic matcha tea, or the beef. There is a certain sweetness to this flavor, but not your typical sweetness with sugar. Instead, I found the sweetness to come across as sort of minty tasting.”
“This flavor is described as tasting nontraditional, where mission is accomplished. It is not a unique flavor, but certainly a very uncommon original flavor.
“I can see how some people would enjoy or even love this flavor, but I can also see why more people might find the taste strange. My initial reaction to this original flavor was that it tastes alright, which by our ratings definition is an Alright (6/10). The majority rules and a Decent (7/10) taste rating is warranted.”
This 2.25 ounce/64 gram bag of jerky sells online for $7.99. That works out to $3.55 an ounce, which barely rates as an expensive price for 100% grass-fed beef.
