This will be the second review on a 1.5 ounce/42 gram bag of Strollo’s mild beef jerky flavor. The ingredient list has been tweaked since this mild flavor was first reviewed back in September 2014. This jerky was kindly submitted for review by the owner, Michael Strollo.
Strollo’s beef jerky is distributed by Strollo’s Homemade Beef Jerky, located in Eatontown, New Jersey. This jerky claims to have the lowest sodium content of any jerky in the U.S.A. This jerky is advertised to contain no preservatives, additives, MSG, or nitrates. Just as praiseworthy, this jerky has almost no sugar. Michael raises some interesting points. Salt and sugar do not dissolve in the drying process. They can be used as cheap fillers to make a profit.
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Soy Sauce (Water, Wheat, Soybeans, Salt), Water, Teriyaki Sauce (Brewed Soy Sauce) (Water, Wheat, Soybeans, Salt), Water, Vinegar, Sugar, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Ginger Powder, Liquid Smoke (Water, Natural Smoke Flavor, Vinegar, Molasses, Caramel Color). Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat
The beef used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. Also, the beef is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to graze on grass. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.
The entire ingredient list is liquid based only. This liquid marinade consists of soy sauce, water, teriyaki sauce, and liquid smoke. Both the soy and teriyaki ingredient lists are good.
It does not get any better than having no sugar. The salt level is extremely low at only 65mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.
As advertised, this jerky has no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservatives added. Just plain old salt is the main preservative. Admirably, there is also no MSG added.
Good (8/10) – Ingredient Rating
Taste Review
These hand sliced jerky strips are mainly small in size, and mostly cut to a medium thickness. The texture is dry, but just barely, which makes for a relatively easy chewing experience. There are some minor visible signs of fat that contribute to the overall taste. Handling this jerky leaves no oily residue on your fingers.
The first taste detected is a medium soy flavor. There is also an apparent smoked flavor in the background. With the absence of any sweetness, the natural beef flavor really stand out. The garlic and onion tastes are mild to faint. As advertised, this flavor is only mildly salty at best. Overall, this is a great and tasty combination of flavors.
You can purchase a six pack of this jerky for $22.50 from the Strollo’s web site. That works out to $3.83 a bag, which works out to $2.55 an ounce. That rates as a moderately expensive price. The price does get cheaper if you buy 12 or 24 bags. First, a healthy ingredient list is used. Second, this jerky tastes great, and is certainly worth your money.
Excellent (10/10) – Taste Rating
Bag Review
This is a standard, somewhat small sized bag. There is a label affixed to the front, and nothing on the back. The Strollo’s logo is interesting, which shows a tough looking cow beating somebody up. On the floor is a baseball cap that states “Competitor”.
Strollo’s slogan printed on the bag is “Our Meat Can’t Be Beat”. There are facts printed such as “No Preservatives”, “Low Sodium”, “No Artificial Ingredients”, “Minimally Processed”, and “Smoke Flavor Added”.
All the important bag categories are addressed with this bag. There is no blurb about Strollo’s, but in fairness, this is a small bag only containing 1.5 ounce/42 grams.
