The first review on Tomahawk Jerky will be on a 1.4 ounce/40 gram bag of their Original flavored beef jerky. This original flavor is described as boasting an irresistibly smooth texture that is bursting with flavors such as garlic and soy. The jerky bag was kindly submitted for review by one of the co-owners, Lauren Summerson.
Tomahawk Jerky is distributed by Tomahawk Jerky Pty Ltd, and is located in Kangaroo Point, Queensland, Australia. With a love of beef jerky, couples Trent & Joss Steinberg, and Brad & Lauren Summerson launched Tomahawk Jerky in September 2017. Tomahawk Jerky is advertised as using hand sliced lean cuts of local, tender Aussie beef marinated in their mix of special spices and sauces. All Tomahawk Jerky products are free from preservatives, artificial flavors and colorings, plus they are gluten-free, making their jerky a healthy snack for the entire family. A fourth flavor is in the works, and is set to be released in 2018.
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Naturally Brewed Gluten-Free Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Rice, Salt), Garlic. Allergen Warnings: Soy, *Sesame * Trace Amounts
This Australian beef used here is guaranteed to be ethically raised, meaning free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. These cattle also are guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to roam about. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Very Good (9/10) rating.
The only liquid marinade used here is a high quality naturally brewed gluten-free soy sauce.
Worth noting is that today, there are no more trace amounts of sesame.
Healthy garlic is used here. Garlic belongs to the allium family, which interestingly will heal people differently based on an individual’s needs.
The sugar level is great at only 0.6 grams of sugar per 40 grams of jerky. The salt level is quite high at 903mg of salt per 40 grams of jerky. Our preference is around 500mg of salt per 40 grams of jerky.
This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite added, or any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, salt is the main preservative used. Commendably, this jerky qualifies to have no MSG added.

Taste Review
These strips of jerky are narrow, and sliced thin. The texture is very dry, almost to the point where it is crunchy, but within reason to chew being so thin. There are no visible signs of fat, and handling this jerky leaves no oily residue on your fingers.
The first taste detected is a mild level of garlic. Mixed in is a moderate level of saltiness. No sweetness is present, where there is a great level of natural beef flavor present.
The soy taste and aroma are pungent, which complements this flavor very well. Beef should be the most prominent taste in an original based flavor, and is the case here. Overall, an addictive jerky, which is full of flavor, simplicity, and richness.
A 1.40 ounce/40 gram bag sells online for $7.99. That works out to $5.70 an ounce, which rates as a very expensive price, at least compared to North America. The price gets cheaper if you order in larger quantities. While pricey, this original flavor from Tomahawk Jerky is surely recommended to anybody who would remotely enjoy the taste of beef.
Excellent (10/10) – Taste Rating
Bag Review
This black resealable plastic bag has labels attached to both the front and back. The Tomahawk Jerky logo is two tomahawks crisscrossed.
Some slogans printed on this bag are “Taste the difference!”, “Our savory sensation!”, and “The perfect anytime snack”. Some facts printed on this bag are “High in Protein”, “Low in Fat”, “Gluten free”, “No artificial flavours, colours, or preservatives”, and “Handcrafted With 100% Aussie Beef”.
Some bag categories missing are a best before date, a soy allergen alert, a blurb about Tomahawk Jerky or this original flavor, and a transparent window to view the jerky. This was more an anomaly, where normally a best before date is printed. Commendably, an email address and phone number are provided for customer inquiries.
