Slant Shack – Spicy Redrub 100% Grass-Fed Beef Jerky

Thursday, December 13, 2018 Leave a Comment

Slant Shack - Spicy Redrub 100% Grass-Fed Beef JerkyIn 2009, Josh Kace and a group of jerky-enthusiast friends decided that they deserved a better jerky experience. They gathered under the slanted roof of a New York City apartment and a dream was born: tender beef jerky made from 100% grass-fed beef, organic spices, and non-GMO, preservative-free marinades. The mission at Slant Shack is to create a delicious, nutritious snack made from whole, quality ingredients. SlantShack is a Certified B Corporation meaning they incorporate social and environmental concerns into its business goals. They collaborate with third-party certifiers to ensure that all of their suppliers adhere to the highest standards for animal welfare and sustainable agricultural practices. Slant Shack jerky is distributed under the name of Slantshack Jerky, LLC., and they are located in Brooklyn, New York.

The next review on Slant Shack will be on a 2 ounce/56 gram bag of their spicy redrub flavored 100% grass-fed beef jerky. This flavor is described as being sweet n’ tangy, with a kick — a favorite! The bag was kindly submitted for review by co-founder & CEO David Koretz.

Ingredient Review

Grass-Fed Beef, Organic Soy Sauce (Water, Organic Soybeans, Salt), Organic Ketchup (Organic Tomato Concentrate Made From Red Ripe Organic Tomatoes, Organic Distilled Vinegar, Sugar, Salt, Onion Powder, Spices, Natural Flavoring), Organic Spices, Organic Worcestershire Sauce (Water, Organic Vinegar, Organic Gluten Free Tamari [Water, Organic Soybeans, Salt], Organic Sugar, Salt, Organic Garlic Powder, Organic Onion Powder, Organic Spices), Organic Dark Brown Sugar (Evapoarated Cane Juice and Molasses), Tabasco Sauce (Distilled Vinegar, Red Pepper, Salt), Organic Onion Powder, Organic Garlic Powder, Distilled White Vinegar, Honey, Salt, Molasses.    Allergen Warnings: Soy

Slant Shack - Spicy Redrub 100% Grass-Fed Beef JerkySlant Shack is guaranteed to use 100% grass-fed beef. As a result, the cattle are guaranteed to have free range access, and be ethically raised. Therefore, the ingredient rating starts at an Excellent (10/10) rating.

Slant Shack - Spicy Redrub 100% Grass-Fed Beef JerkyThe liquid marinade used here consists of a high quality brand of organic soy sauce, organic ketchup, organic Worcestershire sauce, the respected brand of Tabasco sauce, super healthy distilled white vinegar, and locally sourced honey.

There are some healthy ingredients added such as organic garlic powder, organic onion powder, and organic spices.

The sugar level is acceptable at 2 grams of sugar per 28 grams of sugar. The salt level is sort of on the high side at 520mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky. However, a healthy untreated sea salt is used where the salt levels are therefore ignored.

This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, sea salt is the main preservative used, and distilled vinegar to a lesser degree. Admirably, this jerky qualifies to have no MSG added.

Taste Review

Written by guest jerky reviewer Stéphane Leclerc

The Slant Shack Spicy Redrub 100% Grass Fed Beef Jerky starts off with a good tomato flavor with floral notes of basil followed by a little sweetness and saltiness. These flavors along with the natural beef flavor are well complimented by a splash of acidity. This brightens up the flavors and deepens the entire flavor profile. The Soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce and the garlic are also noticeable at a mild level.

There is a delectable Tabasco and cayenne pepper flavor which one can appreciate without sustaining any emotional scars. This jerky has a little spiciness at first and it intensifies after thoroughly chewing a few more pieces. The spiciness would probably rate approximately 2 out of 5 on the heat scale. Slant Shack does appropriately describe this flavor profile on their website as “Slow building, savory heat”.

Mark and Paul did not or barely did detect any spiciness. I should state that perhaps I am more sensitive to spiciness than them and my tolerance to spiciness would probably be in line with the average consumer. I know I or anyone can build up the same tolerance but in my case, I choose not to.

Every now and then, I find that I do build more tolerance. I simply dial it back or completely cut down entirely on the spiciness to reset my taste buds. I do not wish to trade off the ability to taste all these beautiful, subtle and delicate flavors. I believe losing the ability to taste all these amazingly wonderful flavors would be similar to making love to Alyssa Sutherland with a stack of condoms, a blindfold and a pair of medieval chainmail gauntlets.

This jerky is medium in size and sliced to a medium thickness. The texture is dry and reasonably easy to chew. The aroma of the tomatoes, the basil and the vinegar is fragrant and really appealing, as it should make anyone’s mouth water.

Overall, this enjoyable and fairly complex flavor profile is rather addictive and it leaves you wanting for more. Some may wish for a more robust spiciness and some may argue Slant Shack Spicy Redrub 100% Grass Fed Beef Jerky delivers as stated on their promise.

Mark and I were more favorable towards Slant Shack Spicy Redrub 100% Grass Fed Beef Jerky and we’ve agreed on an Excellent 10/10 taste rating. Cheers!

A 4 pack sells online for $24.99. That works out to $3.12 an ounce, which rates as an average price considering that 100% grass-fed beef jerky is used.

Bag Review

This plastic non-resealable bag has everything imprinted on the front, and nothing on the back.

Slogans printed on this bag are “Made Right. Made Delicious” and “Our Grass is 100% Grass-Fed”. Some facts printed on this bag are “Gluten-Free”, “Cayenne|Chili Pepper|Basil|Molasses”, “Beef Used Has No Antibiotics, No Hormones & No Artificial Ingredients”, and “90 Calories & 14 Grams of Protein”. The question is posed “Why Grass-Fed?”. The answer given is “Slantshack Only Used 100% Grass-Fed Beef Because It Is Free Range, and Never Confined to a Feedlot”.

All bag categories are covered with this bag. There is a good blurb on the back describing Slant Shack. You are encouraged to follow Slant Shack on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. A stamp is displayed designating that Slant Shack is a Certified B Corporation.
