The Patriot Brands Jerky – Outlaw Western Beef Jerky

Tuesday, January 8, 2019 1 Comment

The Patriot Brands Jerky - Outlaw Western Beef JerkyIn 2018, current CEO James Napier, being a knee down amputee, was determined not to let that disability affect him. James reached out to a friend, fellow patriot, serial entrepreneur, and current COO Lance Wood. Together, while eating some special hot sauces at a local barbecue, James thought that he could sell these hot sauces. In collaboration with their wives, The Patriot Brands LLC was launched shortly afterward. James then resurrected his dream of selling jerky. Being a local mom and pop shop with great capacity as a full service meat processor, James had secretly been working on perfecting some jerky flavors. Teaming up with trusted FDA certified processor Grill To Kill with their decades of experience manufacturing jerky, this The Patriot Brands Jerky was officially launched. Late in 2018, The Patriot Brands LLC introduced meat sticks to their line of products for sale. This jerky is distributed by The Patriot Brands LLC, and they are located in Cuba, Missouri.

The next review on The Patriot Brands Jerky will focus on a 3 ounce/84 gram bag of their Outlaw Western flavored beef jerky. This flavor is described as a great smoke filled flavor that is nearly perfect, blended with a touch of Chipotle to bring a taste that sneaks in so smooth – you’d swear there was an Outlaw that just stole your memories of other “Western” Flavored Jerkys. The bag was kindly submitted for review by COO Lance Wood.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Beef, Sweet Chipotle Seasoning (Salt, Brown Sugar, Fructose, Spices Including Chipotle And Red Pepper), Trehalose, Dehydrated Bell Pepper, Garlic Powder, Grill Powder (Tapioca, Dextrin, Salt, Grill Flavor [From Sunfloweroil], Smoke Flavor), Natural Smoke Mesquite Flavor (Contains Maltodextrin), Citric Acid, Vinegar, Sodium Nitrite

The Patriot Brands Jerky - Outlaw Western Beef JerkyThe beef used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. Also, the beef is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to graze on grass. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.

There is no liquid marinade used here other than a small amount of healthy vinegar. The soy sauce used is in powdered form.

Some healthy ingredients are added such as garlic powder and spices.

For a sweet based flavor as we have here, the sugar level is acceptable at 2 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is high at 510mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference is 350mg of salt or less per 28 grams of jerky.

This jerky does not qualify to have no sodium nitrite added, as sodium nitrite is used outright to lose a rating. To a lesser degree, citric acid also acts as a preservative. Admirably, this jerky does qualify to have no added MSG.

Alright (6/10) – Ingredient Rating

Taste Review

Written by guest jerky reviewer Stéphane Leclerc

The Patriot Brands Outlaw Western Beef Jerky flaunts an appealing fragrance and a deliciously complex flavor profile. This great jerky treat is totally “Gangster” and the flavors are so incredibly addictive.

There is no single ingredient really standing out other than a great balance and depth of flavors. The dehydrated bell peppers are a pleasant reminder of how great the flavor of bell peppers is in jerky, as they round off these flavors very well. A healthy splash of vinegar and citric acid brightens and make all these flavors “POP”.

The chipotle is mild and really flavorful, it yields a gentle spicy kick and it would probably rate at 1/5 on the heat scale. A light sweetness is accompanied by the great taste of smokiness and natural beef flavor.

These strips are mainly medium to large in size and they are inconsistently sliced between thick and medium in thickness. The texture is pleasantly soft, tender and it does require a reasonable effort while chewing a few strips.

Paul added: “As I eat more, I am being bucked by the bronco more and more. Every savory bite I take, the higher the bull bucks me. Crap, I’m holding on by my fingertips, ’cause I can’t stop eating, and this bastard can’t stop bucking. Last piece, first bite, wheehew, up in the air I go, fingers don’t fail me now, next bite, I feel like a kite, next bite, holy crap, I can’t keep holding on, last bite, YEEEEHAWWW, I’m flying like a bird. Down I come, splat! right into a soft pile of recent, ripe bronco dung. The buck won, but I feel like I did as well, ’cause I just survived The Patriot Brands Outlaw Western Beef Jerky ride, and oh, what a ride!!”

This Patriot Brands Outlaw Western Beef Jerky packs a gentle little spicy kick and we highly recommend it to any and all fans of chipotle with a knack for great smokiness. This jerky easily scores an Excellent 10/10 taste rating from each one of us Jerky Brothers …and ya slap yo’ Mama!

Please be advised, The Patriot Brands are including a pocket sized version of the US Constitution with each and every online jerky order. Cheers!

A 3 ounce/85 gram bag is currently on sale and sells online for $4.99. That works out to $1.66 an ounce, which rates as a very cheap price.

Excellent (10/10) – Taste Rating

Bag Review

This clear plastic resealable bag has a label affixed to the front, and nothing on the back. With The Patriot Brands LLC being so patriotic, it is no surprise whatsoever that the colors of the USA flag red, white and blue are used.

There are no slogans or facts printed on this bag.

The majority of bag categories are covered here. Missing is a blurb printed about The Patriot Brands Jerky and this Outlaw Western flavor, Also missing is a best before date, but a sticker on the back is likely the batch number, which could translate to a best before date.

Decent (7/10) – Bag Rating
