Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Chamoy (Chili Powder, Sugar, Citric Acid, Salt, Water), Sugar, Paprika, Cayenne, Crushed Chilies, Jerky Spices (Salt, Spices, Sugar, Dehydrated Garlic, Dextrose, Paprika, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (Wheat & Soy), Spice Extracts, Garlic Flavor, Sunflower Oil (mfg. aid)), Soy Sauce (Water, Wheat, Soybeans, Salt), Lemon Juice, Sodium Nitrite. Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat
Sierra Madre Provision Co. uses ranch raised beef, which means the cattle have free range access to graze on grass. The cattle are also ethically raised, meaning that the cows receive no growth hormones or additional antibiotics. As a result, the ingredient rating starts a Very Good (9/10) rating.
The liquid marinade used here contains water, a good brand of chamoy sauce, a decent brand of soy sauce, sunflower oil, and healthy lemon juice.
Some healthy ingredients added are paprika, cayenne pepper, crushed chili peppers, spices, garlic powder, and spice extracts.
The sugar level is high at 8 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference is 4 grams of sugar or less for a spicy based flavor. The salt level is somewhat high at 440mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky to lose another rating. Our preference is 350mg of salt or less per 28 grams of jerky.
This jerky does not qualify to be sodium nitrite free, as sodium nitrite is used outright as a preservative to lose a rating. This jerky does not qualify to have no MSG added as the highly processed, cheap flavor enhancer hydrolyzed vegetable protein is used to lose another rating.

SIERRA MADRE PROVISIONS CO. – SPICY CHAMOY BEEF JERKY
Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker
When I open the bag I immediately smell teriyaki. We all know what teriyaki smells like, and this is it. This consists of only one very large (piece?) of jerky. It’s in the shape of a diamond, and it is of medium thickness, as well as a very red hue. I also see seeds on the jerky, presumably a spice (chamoy) of some kind.
When I bite into the jerky, I am met with a very juicy, somewhat spicy flavor. I am tasting salt at a medium level, sweet, but not too sweet, as well as garlic and potentially onion to a very lesser degree.
This jerky is not only juicy, but it is also quite tasty. Whatever chamoy means, I am still very much enjoying the flavor.
I can find no issue whatsoever with this particular flavor of jerky. It is exceedingly tasty, so I am quite comfortable awarding this flavor of jerky a resounding 10/10. Gentlemen?
Here is what Mark had to say about this Spicy Chamoy beef jerky flavor from Sierra Madre Provision Co. “Thanks Paul for the bang on taste review. It is hard to disagree with most things stated. While unfamiliar with chamoy, which is a sweet and tangy sauce or condiment with Mexican roots, it is an interesting tasting flavor. While on the sweet side, the flavor lives up to its name being spicy but not hot. I would not say it’s a fruity tasting flavor, but it’s hard to pinpoint what I am tasting with this complex flavor profile. Paul was certainly correct in noting the red hue of this jerky.”
” I do not necessarily agree with Paul that this flavor smells like teriyaki. While I too cannot find any issues with this flavor, I cannot say that this flavor ‘wowed’ me, being ignorant of the flavor of chamoy. With Paul at a 10 rating and myself at a 9, an Excellent (10/10) taste rating will be awarded.”
This 3 ounce/85 gram bag sells online for $6.99, which works out to $2.33 an ounce. That rates as a cheap price. Free shipping is offered on orders over $49.99.

Bag Review
This is a relatively tall, resealable bag. The front is gold, and the back is silver, with nothing on the back. A label is affixed to the front, but nothing is on the back. The scenic picture on this bag depicts mountains, including a few California palm trees.
There are no slogans printed on this bag. The only fact printed is “Liquid Smoke Flavoring Added”.
Some missing bag categories are a blurb about Sierra Madre Provision Co. and a best before date. A batch number is provided, which could translate to the best before date. Kudos to Sierra Madre Provision Co., where they provide a toll-free phone number for customer inquiries.
