Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Sugar, Water, Salt, Soy Sauce [Water, Sugars (Glucose Solids, Blackstrap Molasses), Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Salt, Caramel Color], Corn Syrup Solids, Spices, Garlic, Sodium Erythorbate, Sodium Nitrite, Smoke Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat
The beef used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. Also, the beef is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to graze on grass. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.
The texture of this jerky is chopped and formed. As a result, two ingredient ratings are deducted without a natural whole muscled strip of jerky.
The liquid marinade uses only water and an unhealthy brand of soy sauce.
The sugar level is sort of high at around 6 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. The salt level is high at around 597mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky. Our preference is 350mg of salt or less.
This jerky does not qualify to have no sodium nitrite added as sodium nitrite is used outright, along with sodium erythorbate as preservatives to lose a rating. This jerky does not qualify to have no MSG added, as the highly processed, cheap flavour enhancer hydrolyzed soy protein is used in the soy sauce to lose another rating.

Taste Review
THE GRAND OL’ MEAT COMPANY LTD. – HOT BEEF JERKY
Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker
When I open the bag I don’t really smell anything. It is rather odourless. The pieces are extremely long and sliced rather thin. The jerky is dry and rigid. It looks chopped and formed, just like The Great Canadian Meat Company. There is no oily residue.
When I bite into the jerky I immediately taste salt, at quite a high level, but that does not deter me. I also taste mild pepper, no sweetness whatsoever, and possibly mild garlic.
The jerky is quite tasty for being chopped and formed, I am a big fan of salt. I also am an ardent fan of dry, rigid beef jerky, it is just as our forefathers intended (a popular line from me). I didn’t really detect much heat, giving justification to deduct a rating.
This will be an enjoyable treat to gnaw on late at night, just the right snack before going to bed. With all this in mind, I feel justified in awarding an 8/10, deducting another point for being chopped and formed.
Here is what Mark had to say about this Hot beef jerky flavour from The Grand Ol’ Meat Company Ltd.: “Thanks Paul for the candid taste review. There is some heat present, but I found it to be quite inconsistent from strip to strip. These strips are surprisingly dry and tough for a chopped and formed product. The smokiness and soy and are at light levels. I would not say there is no sweetness, which I found to be at a mild level.”
“Apart from some heat, nothing stands out, which is bland tasting. This jerky is very salty tasting, which is right down Paul’s alley. With myself at a 6 rating and Paul at an 8 rating, a Decent (7/10) taste rating will be awarded.”
This 9.5 ounce/270 gram bag of jerky sold for $20.00. That works out to $2.11 an ounce, which rates as a cheap price.
