The next review on Steve’s PaleoGoods Jerky will focus on a 2.15 ounce/61 gram bag of their original flavored PaleoKit. A Paleokit is a type of trail mix, which consists of beef jerky, nuts, and fruits. This jerky was kindly submitted by the Steve’s PaleoGoods team.
The Steve’s PaleoGoods Jerky brand name is distributed by Steve’s PaleoGoods, based out of Pennsauken, New Jersey. This PaleoKit is what started this company, and the Steve’s Club organization was founded in 2007, with an emphasis on healthy eating and fitness. The founder, Steve Liberati (aka Head Caveman), and his wife Kristen started giving out Paleokits to impoverished youth. Then they started selling online, where 15% of all proceeds go directly back to supporting Steve’s Club. Soon sales soared, and Steve’s Club is now nationwide.
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef Jerky (Beef, Sea Salt, Apple Juice Concentrate, Paprika, Pineapple Juice, Beet Powder, Black Pepper, Garlic Powder, Ascorbic Acid), Infused Cranberries (Cranberries, Apple Juice Concentrate), Infused Strawberries (Strawberries, Apple Juice Concentrate, Citric Acid), Almonds, Macadamia Nuts, Pecans.
This beef used is ethically raised, meaning no growth hormones, or additional antibiotics are given. The cattle also have partial free range access to graze on grass. These cattle are also fed things such as hay, grains, and legumes.
The liquid marinade is all juice with apple juice concentrate, and pineapple juice. Pineapples have a natural antioxidant named bromelain that is widely used in the food industry as a meat tenderizer.
There are healthy ingredients used such as black pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and the super healthy vegetable beet powder.
As for fruits, the cranberries and strawberries are infused with apple juice concentrate. The healthy nuts consists of almonds, macadamia nuts, and pecans.
As advertised, there is no sodium nitrite used, nor any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Healthy sea salt, high on minerals, is the main preservative, and ascorbic acid as a form Vitamin C to a lesser extent. Also as advertised, admirably, there is no MSG added.
Very Good (9/10) – Ingredient Rating
Taste Review
These strips of beef are small in size, and sliced to a medium thickness. The texture is dry, just the way traditional jerky is intended. There are no visible signs of fat on this jerky, and handling this jerky leaves a considerable oily residue on your fingers.
The first taste detected is the natural meat flavor, the way an original flavor should be. There is no sugary taste, but there is a fruity sweet taste, and a light smokiness. The salt level is mild, and all the spices are mild or faint tasting. Overall, this is tasty combination of nuts, fruits, and jerky.
This 2.1 ounce/61 gram bag can be purchased online for $4.49. A 4.3 ounce/122 gram sized bag sells online for $6.49, which works out to $1.50 an ounce. That rates as a cheap price. This paleokit is very healthy, and 15% of all purchases go towards supporting at-risk youth at Steve’s Club National Program, a worthy and noble organization.
Bag Review
The plastic bag used is somewhat uncommon. There is a label affixed on the front, but on the back, the label seems infused inside the plastic. The best feature of this jerky bag is that it is vacuum sealed, the absolute best way to keep jerky fresh, where oxygen is the enemy of jerky.
On the back of the bag, there is a great write up of Steve’s Club. Sticking with the paleo theme, the Steve’s PaleoGoods logo depicts a man walking, with what looks like a walking stick.
The only fact stated on this bag is “15% of your purchase supports Steve’s Club National Program”.
All major bag categories are covered with this bag. There are no fancy graphics or slogans, but this bag does its job effectively being vacuum sealed.
