The next review for Outlawed Jerky will be on a 2 ounce/56 gram bag of their Original flavored beef jerky. This bag was graciously submitted for review by one of the co-owners, Chris Gilch.
This Outlawed Jerky brand name is distributed by Outlawed Jerky Co. LLC, and are located in White Plains, New York. The owners Chris and Jeff Gilch are cousins, who had a love for beef jerky and the outdoors. Their homemade jerky soon became a hit with family and friends. In 2012, they officially launched this Outlawed Jerky brand name. Since then, a lot of work has been put into their jerky, where it has unofficially been relaunched in 2016.
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Wheat, Salt), Worcestershire Sauce (Distilled White Vinegar, Anchovies, Garlic, Molasses, Onions, Salt, Sugar, Water, Chili Pepper Extract, Cloves, Natural Flavorings, Tamarind Extract), Water, Apple Cider Vinegar, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Liquid Smoke, Cumin Powder, Red Pepper Flakes, Celery Seed Powder. Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat, Anchovies
The beef used is ethically raised, meaning it is guaranteed to be free of growth hormones and additional antibiotics. Also, the cattle have free range access being pasture raised, and then finished with grains. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Very Good (9/10) rating.
The liquid marinade is comprised of a highly respected Worcestershire sauce, a very good shoyu soy sauce, water, naturally healthy apple cider vinegar, and liquid smoke. Apple cider vinegar is vinegar made from fermented apple cider, and known to have wide range of health benefits. The shoyu (Japanese for soy sauce) is sourced from a maker in New York, and the wheat level is minuscule at only 5 parts per million (ppm).
There are healthy spices used such as garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, and hot red pepper flakes. Cumin in particular is healthy, and known to help in cancer prevention.
The sugar level is acceptable at 6 grams of sugar per 57 grams of jerky. The salt level is quite acceptable at 400mg of salt per 57 grams of jerky.
This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, the main preservative used is salt. Also, to a lesser extent, apple cider vinegar and celery seeds act as a preservative with its naturally occurring nitrates. Admirably, there is no MSG added.

Taste Review
These strips of jerky are mainly small to medium in size. The thickness is at a medium level. This texture is sort of dry, and reasonably easy to chew. There are no signs of fat, and handling this jerky leaves no oily residue on your fingers.
At first you encounter a bold blend of flavors. At moderate levels are a great ratio of Worcestershire and soy sauce. The apple cider vinegar gives a mild tanginess. At mild levels are garlic, onion, saltiness and sweetness. A faint level of cumin compliments the flavor nicely.
As an added bonus, there is a mild spiciness with this flavor. On a heat scale, it would rate a 2 out of 5. Overall, a classic tasting Original based flavor with a few subtle changes that work out great.
Three 2 ounce/57 gram bags sell online for $20.00. That works out to $3.33 an ounce, which rates as an expensive price. While not a cheap price, this jerky is surely recommended to anybody who would enjoy an Original based flavor with a mild spiciness.
Excellent (10/10) – Taste Rating
Bag Review
This resealable plastic bag has everything imprinted on the bag itself, both on the front and back. There are no labels attached to this bag. Unusually, this label is printed lengthwise instead of heightwise.
There are no slogans printed on this bag. Some facts printed on this bar are “Handcrafted in Small Batches”, “Premium Beef & Spices”, “No Nitrates or Preservatives”, “Whole Muscle Cut”, “Made With Bold Flavors”, and “Smoke Flavor Added”. A USA flag is displayed indicating that this jerky is made in the USA.
There are some bag categories missing such as a transparent window to view the jerky, no best before date, the jerky weight not stated in grams, and no blurb printed about the flavor or jerky. There is some sort of best before date printed that is not legible.
