Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Salt, Onion, Spices (Including Black Pepper and Chili Pepper), Red Bell Pepper, Sugar, Garlic, Natural Flavoring, Pure Honey, Water, Brown Sugar (Sugar, Cane Syrups, Caramel may be added for color), Sodium Nitrate
The beef used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. Also, the beef is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to graze on grass. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.
The liquid marinade consists of just healthy pure honey and water.
Some healthy ingredients added are onions, spices, black pepper, chili peppers, red bell pepper, and garlic.
The sugar level is exceptionally high at 11 grams of sugar per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference is 3 grams of sugar or less per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is fairly low at 190mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.
This jerky does not qualify to have no sodium nitrite as sodium nitrate is used outright as a preservative. Admirably, this flavor does qualify to have no MSG added.

SOLDIER BOY BEEF JERKY – ORIGINAL BEEF JERKY
Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker
When I open the bag I smell natural beef. Nothing else much really. The pieces are small in size and are sliced rather thick. The jerky is slightly oily and leaves a bit of an oily residue on your fingers.
When I bite into the jerky the first flavor I detect is juice, maybe pineapple juice, or something juicy, perhaps cherry or peach or something. I also detect salt, sweet, maybe a bit too sweet for my liking, slight pepper, nominal garlic, and natural beef.
I’m not typically a fan of sweet, juicy jerky, and this flavor is in line with other sweet juicy flavors.
Overall a decent jerky, just not coming across as advertised. It does not taste like an original flavor, nor is it blowing me away, so I will deduct another point. Too much juice flavor, and it is too sweet for me. An 8/10 in my humble opinion. Gentlemen?

I really enjoyed the Soldier Boy Jerky – Original Beef Jerky. The aroma is nice, and I especially like its thick and tender texture. The flavor opens with pleasant fruitiness and reasonable sweetness. I find this jerky to be reminiscent of an Asian flavor. The flavor profile is light and interesting, and the texture beautifully delivers.
I have nothing bad to say about it other than it may perhaps be too sweet as an Original. I really love this Soldier Boy Beef Jerky – Original Beef Jerky and I rate it 10\10 Taste Rating and 9/10, if I self-censure myself. Godspeed!
Here is what Mark had to say about this Original beef jerky flavor from Soldier Boy Beef Jerky: “Thanks Paul and Stéphane for the candid taste reviews. This Original flavor was a great reminder of what taste bell peppers bring to the table. Sadly, so few jerky makers use bell peppers as an ingredient with jerky. Yes, this jerky was too sweet tasting. Excessive sweetness is probably my biggest pet peeve with jerky, but surprisingly I did not find it all that offensive. Stéphane immediately remarked that this Original flavor resembled a Teriyaki flavor, where I could not agree more.”
“No juice is present in the ingredient list, but I agree that the taste profile tasted like there was a juice present. It is not uncommon for Original flavors to have a juicy type of flavor. The natural beef flavor was spot on, and the texture was solid even though softer than I would prefer, which are the important aspects of an Original flavor. Overall an interesting taste profile, which I found addictive. With Paul at an 8, Stéphane and I at a 9 rating, a Very Good (9/10) taste rating will be awarded.”
This 3 ounce/85 gram bag of jerky sells for $9.99, which equates to $3.33 an ounce. That rates as a borderline expensive price.
