The Sierra Madre Provision Co. jerky brand name is distributed and manufactured by Sierra Madre Provisions. They are located in Sierra Madre, California, which is in the foothill of the San Gabriel Mountains. They have been in business for over 30 years selling wholesale and retail, using ranch raised cattle. Their meat is hand sliced, and Sierra Madre Provision Co. recently introduced a totally revamped web site.
The next review on Sierra Madre Provision Co. will focus on a 3.25 ounce/92 gram bag of their Whiskey BBQ beef jerky flavor. This will be the second review on this Whiskey BBQ flavor, where the bag design has since been slightly tweaked. The flavor is simply described as another jerky candy! This jerky was kindly submitted by the creator of this Sierra Madre Provision Co. jerky brand, James Schaft (a.k.a. – Jimmy the Jerky Man).
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, BBQ Sauce (Tomato Concentrate, High Fructose Corn Syrup Solids, Vinegar, Molasses, Water, Hickory Smoke Flavoring, Salt, Modified Food Starch, Mustard, Spices, Brown Sugar), BBQ Seasoning [Brown Sugar, Salt, Spices, Liquid Smoke, Vegetable Oil), Bourbon Whiskey, Vinegar, Honey, Liquid Smoke, Corn Syrup Solids, Cayenne Pepper, Cure Mix (Salt, Sodium Nitrite). Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat
The beef used for this jerky is ranch raised, which qualifies as ethically raised cattle, with free range access to grass as part of their natural diet. Just one step below using organic meat, almost on par. As a result, the ingredient rating starts at a Very Good (9/10) rating.
The liquid marinade used here consists of an average BBQ sauce, real bourbon whiskey, super healthy vinegar, healthy honey, and liquid smoke. It is disappointing to see that the BBQ sauce uses the highly processed sweetener high fructose corn syrup solids to lose a rating.
There is no nutrition facts table provided. As a result, the exact sugar and salt levels are unknown.
There is no MSG added in this jerky. This jerky does unfortunately use sodium nitrite outright as a preservative to lose another rating.

Taste Review
Written by guest jerky reviewer Stéphane Leclerc
I took a whiff and I was immediately intrigued by the Sierra Madre Provision Co. Whiskey BBQ Beef Jerky. The BBQ, whiskey and smokiness together create a wonderful aroma unlike anything commonly known in the jerky word.
The first flavors are as advertised, a healthy dose of whiskey flavoring and a tomato based barbecue sauce. This jerky has moderately significant sweetness with a mild saltiness. The tomato flavor is quite enjoyable and it is comparable to red tomato ketchup.
The natural beef flavor is unfortunately drowned in all the sweetness. The seasoning is nicely accentuated with smokiness and it enhances the overall flavor profile. After chewing a few bites, a slight spiciness starts building up and as chewing goes on a little kick is felt on the tongue.
These strips of jerky are quite large and they’re reasonably sliced between medium to thick, it could be adequately described as thick-cut style. The texture is fairly dry and leathery, a tad sticky and it does leave the fingers a bit sticky after handling. This jerky does require some significant jaw action in chewing and it probably wouldn’t be the pick of the month at the local old age home.
Most of us found this Sierra Madre Provision Co. Whiskey BBQ Beef Jerky quite addictive and it left us wanting more.
Mark would recommend this flavor to any fans of sweet tasting barbecue sauces and said: “The taste of whiskey is purely a novelty, where the drying process removes all alcohol content”.
We’ve awarded Sierra Madre Provision Co. Whiskey BBQ Beef Jerky a Very Good (9/10) taste rating. Cheers.
This 3.25 ounce/92 gram bag retails for $6.99. That works out to $2.15 an ounce, which rates as a cheap price.

Bag Review
This gold colored resealable bag is a fairly tall, with a label on the front, and nothing on the back. The scenic picture on this bag depicts mountains, including a few California palm trees.
There are no slogans printed on this bag. The only fact printed is “Liquid Smoke Flavoring Added”.
There are a few bag categories missing such as slogans, a blurb about Sierra Madre Provision Co., and a nutrition facts table. Kudos to Sierra Madre Provision Co., where they provide a toll free phone number for customer inquiries.
