Savage Jerky Co. – Mojo Beef Jerky (Review #2)

Sunday, January 24, 2016 Leave a Comment

Savage Jerky Co. - Mojo Beef Jerky (Review #2)This will be the second review on Savage Jerky Co. for a 3 ounce/85 gram bag of their mojo flavored beef jerky, where the bag design has since changed. This mojo flavor happened to be their first flavor, and also considered their original flavor. The bag was kindly submitted for review by the Savage Jerky Co. team.

In 2013, the owners Brad and Michelle Summey took a road trip with some friends. Disappointed with the same old jerky selection available on the way, they decided to launch their own jerky company. The Savage Jerky Co. brand name was launched in 2014, where they are located in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Today, they carry nine different flavors, where the emphasis is on using good ingredients.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Beef, Lime Juice, Water, Orange Juice, Lemon Juice, Molasses, Sea Salt, Brown Sugar, Garlic, Onion, Spices.

Savage Jerky Co. - Mojo Beef Jerky (Review #2)The beef used is not guaranteed to be free of growth hormones or additional antibiotics. Also, the beef is not guaranteed to have at least partial free range access to graze on grass. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is a Good (8/10) rating.

Savage Jerky Co. - Mojo Beef Jerky (Review #2)We have an interesting citrus based liquid marinade consisting of lime juice, water, orange juice, and lemon juice. Juices are decent, but overrated on how healthy they are.

Savage Jerky Co. - Mojo Beef Jerky (Review #2)Garlic and onion offer many health benefits. The healthy herb cilantro is used, which offers many health benefits.

The sugar level used here is highly respectable at only 1 gram of sugar per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is also very respectable at 150mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.

This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservative. Salt is imperative to keep jerky fresh. It is great to see that mineral rich sea salt is used, as opposed to highly refined table salt. Also admirably, there is no MSG added.

Good (8/10) – Ingredient Rating

Taste Review

These jerky strips are medium in size, and sliced to a medium thickness. There is a dry texture, but not overly dry, which is relatively easy to chew. There are no visible signs of fat, and handling this jerky leaves no residue on your fingers. The strips are visibly coated with spices.

The first taste detected is the citrus flavors, especially the lime. It does not take long for a moderate level of cilantro to be apparent. As a pleasant surprise, there is a good level of oregano that really compliments the overall flavor. With a lack of sweetness, there is some natural beef flavor, but the juices are the most dominant taste.

The only complaint about this flavor being advertised to have garlic is that the garlic level is only at a light level. Otherwise, this flavor is quite unique, memorable, and impressive tasting.

This 3 ounce/85 gram bag sells online for $7.99. That works out to $2.67 an ounce, which rates as an expensive price. The flavor is absolutely recommended to anybody who enjoys a citrus based jerky flavor accompanied with strong spices.

Very Good (9/10) – Taste Rating

Bag Review

This is a standard sized resealable bag. Everything is imprinted directly on the bag, both on the front and the back. The Savage Jerky Co. logo is a silhouette of a bearded man (savage).

Their slogans are “Hand-Crafted”, “Small Batch”, and “Eat like a savage”. The flavor is described as “Garlic, Lime & Cilantro”.

The only minor bag category missing is the jerky weight not being stated in grams. There is a great blurb printed about Savage Jerky Co., and how Brad and Michelle started their own jerky company.

Very Good (9/10) – Bag Rating
