Sophia’s Survival Food – Original 100% Grass-Fed Beef Jerky

Tuesday, November 28, 2017 Leave a Comment

Sophia's Survival Food - Original 100% Grass-Fed Beef JerkyThe next review on Sophia’s Survival Food will focus on a 1 ounce/28 gram bag of their original flavored 100% grass-fed beef jerky. This bag was kindly submitted for review by Chief Survivalist Sophia Dubrovina.

Sophia’s Survival Food is distributed under the same name of Sophia’s Survival Food, and it is located in Santa Clara, California. Sophia found it challenging to find a healthy brand of jerky, so she started making her own jerky. Soon her jerky became a hit with her friends and family. In 2011, Sophia officially launched this Sophia’s Survival Food jerky brand. Only 100% grass-fed beef and all natural ingredients are used. Sophia’s Survival Food is Whole 30 Approved, paleo friendly, and there are currently four different flavors for sale.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Grass-Fed Beef, Water, Vinegar, Unrefined Sea Salt.

Sophia's Survival Food - Original 100% Grass-Fed Beef JerkyThis 100% grass-fed beef is sourced from Richards Grassfeed Beef, where Sophia makes it a focus to source beef from small ranchers in the USA. The jerky qualifies to be ethically raised, meaning no growth hormones or additional antibiotics are given. Also, this jerky qualifies to have free range access.

Sophia's Survival Food - MildThe liquid marinade used here is just healthy vinegar and water.

Sophia's Survival Food - MildThere is absolutely no sugar used in this jerky. Also to Sophia’s credit, the salt level is quite low at 130mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.

Sophia's Survival Food - MildThis jerky qualifies to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservative. Instead, mineral rich minimally processed Redmond Real Salt is the main preservative, along with vinegar to a lesser extent. With more kudos to Sophia’s Survival Food, this jerky has no MSG added.

Excellent (10/10) – Ingredient Rating

Taste Review

Sophia's Survival Food - MildThese strips of jerky are medium to small in size, and sliced thin. The texture is dry, but still reasonable to chew. There are no visible signs of fat, and handling this jerky leaves no oily residue on your fingers.

The first flavor detected is a strong level of natural beef flavor. While the aroma of vinegar is noticeable on each strip, the actual taste of vinegar is light tasting. The saltiness is also at a light level. There is no sweetness present whatsoever.

It is hard to be critical of this flavor. Minimal ingredients are used so that people with allergens or food sensitivities can enjoy this protein rich snack. There is a mild flavor available also, which offers more flavors such as lemon, garlic, and black pepper. Overall, a very paleo tasting flavor with a heavy focus on the natural beef flavor.

A 2 ounce/56 gram bag of jerky sells online for $6.99, which works out to $3.50 an ounce. That would rate as an expensive price. This original flavor is certainly recommended to people who prefer just mainly the taste of beef, and using 100% grass-fed beef.

Very Good (9/10) – Taste Rating

Bag Review

The bag displayed at the bottom is a 1oz original flavored bag purchased online in 2012 for $3.50.

This non-resealable plastic bag has a label affixed to the front, and a sticker on the back.

There are no slogans printed on this bag. Some facts printed on this bag are “Made With 100% Grass-Fed Beef”, “Paleo Friendly Beef Jerky”, “Gluten Free”, and “Soy Free”.

The only bag category missing is a blurb printed about Sophia’s Survival Food and/or this original flavor.

Decent (7/10) – Bag Rating
