The brand name PC is a well-known brand name for stores such as the Loblaw’s grocery store, and many other grocery chains. PC is an abbreviation for President’s Choice, whose mission is to develop unique or superior products that offer better value to Canadians. The bag states that Bob Meyer of Helmville, Montana is among their dedicated suppliers of beef raised without the use of antibiotics and growth hormones. This jerky is actually made by an unknown private labeler. While not confirmed, this original flavor is likely a stock recipe. This PC jerky brand is distributed by Loblaws Inc., and they are based out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
The first review on PC will focus on a 2.8 ounce/80 gram bag of their original flavored beef jerky. This bag was purchased at a Shopper’s Drug Mart store in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Water, Sugar, Sea Salt, Black Pepper, Cultured Celery Powder, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Smoke Flavor, Vinegar Powder (White Vinegar, Sodium Hydroxide), Smoke.
The beef used is guaranteed to have been raised ethically, meaning not administered growth hormones or additional antibiotics. As a result, the highest ingredient rating possible is Very Good (9/10).
The liquid marinade used here is just plain old water. The vinegar is in powdered form, and uses sodium hydroxide, otherwise known as caustic soda or lye to lose a rating.
There are some healthy ingredients added such as black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
The sugar level is acceptable at 2 grams of sugar per 27 grams of jerky. The salt level is somewhat high at 540mg of salt per 27 grams of jerky. However, the salt level is ignored because healthy minimally processed sea salt is used.
This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite. Instead, apart from sea salt, cultured celery powder is used as a preservative. Admirably, this jerky does qualify to have no MSG added.
Good (8/10) – Ingredient Rating
Taste Review
These jerky strips are medium to small in size and sliced to a medium thickness. The texture is dry and requires a reasonable effort to chew. There is not much of any aroma with this jerky.
The first tastes detected are light levels of onion and garlic, mild saltiness, and a light level of sweetness. This flavor finishes off with a good level of smoke to give it some character.
While not everybody notices this, there is a type of processed beef flavor. This jerky does not taste natural and can be off-putting.
Here is what Paul had to say: “When I open the bag, I smell nothing really. The jerky is somewhat rigid, along with dry, the way jerky should be. The first flavors I encounter are salt, pepper, reasonable sweet, along with light garlic, light onion and a decent amount of natural beef. As with most original flavors, nothing is really jumping out at me, however, being an original flavor, I am experiencing a tasty melting pot of flavors, better than your average original flavor. Again, nothing spectacular, however, a cut above. An 8/10 seems to be the most accurate assessment.
This jerky was shared between six people. The ratings ranged from 5 – 8. Only 2 of the 6 people noticed this processed beef flavor, and both were at a 5 rating. This jerky has a pleasant light seasoning, but it’s hard to get around this unnatural tasting beef.
This 2.8 ounce/80 gram bag was purchased for $5.99. That equates to $2.13 an ounce, which rates as a cheap price.
