Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Wild Boar (Meat From Feral Swine), Water, Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Wheat, Salt), Teriyaki Sauce (Soy Sauce [Water, Soybeans, Wheat, Salt], Wine, Sugar, Water, Vinegar, Salt, Spices, Onion Powder, Succinic Acid, Garlic Powder), Brown Sugar, Pineapple Juice, Black Pepper, Liquid Smoke, Garlic Powder, White Pepper. Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat
The wild boar is ethically raised, meaning no growth hormones or additional antibiotics are given. These wild boar also have partial free range access to roam about as nature intended. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is an Excellent (10/10) rating.
The liquid marinade is comprised of a decent brand of soy sauce, a respected brand of teriyaki sauce, water, healthy pineapple juice, and liquid smoke.
The only healthy ingredients added are garlic powder, white pepper, and black pepper.
The sugar level is excellent at only 1 gram of sugar per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is somewhat high at 410mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference is 350mg of salt or less per 28 grams of jerky.
This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite. Instead, salt is the main preservative used. Admirably, this jerky has no MSG added.

J.C. RIVERS GOURMET JERKY – BLACK PEPPER WILD BOARD JERKY
Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker
When I open the bag I smell pineapple juice. After debate, we concluded that the fruity taste is from the soy sauce. I received three pieces, two quite small and one quite large. The jerky is sliced to a medium thickness, and the slices vary. There is no oily residue with this jerky.
When I bite into the jerky I taste salt at a decent level, minimal sweetness, pepper at a decent level, and possibly some light garlic in the background. The texture of this jerky is very favorable to me. It is rigid enough to appease our forefathers who preferred rawhide jerky, as do I. This flavor of jerky is called “black pepper”, and while I do taste it, it has not come across as bold enough to impress me. I will consume more to hopefully encounter the bold pepper taste.
As I consume more, I definitely experience more of the pepper kick, which kicks up a notch or two. I absolutely love this texture. The pepper is gaining intensity as I consume more and more of this jerky. A couple more bites and my jerky experience will be over, at least until next time. By this time the pepper level is carrying the review, it is in overdrive.
Color me duly impressed. I am thoroughly enjoying this particular jerky experience, a no-doubt 10/10.
Here is what Mark had to say about this Black Pepper wild boar jerky flavor from J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky: “Thanks Paul for the positive taste review. I 100% agree with your review. I really appreciate that this jerky tastes like homemade jerky, thanks to the vacuum sealed bag. As advertised, everything about this black pepper flavor tastes natural. The wild boar has a rich taste superior to beef. The recipe used is reminiscent of my homemade beef jerky. The overall taste profile is well balanced and tastes like more. To the credit of J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky, very little sweetness is present. A unanimous Excellent (10/10) taste rating will be awarded. Take a bow J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky, a very enthusiastic two thumbs up!!👍👍”
This 2 ounce/57 gram bag of jerky sells for $10.99, which equates to $5.50 an ounce. That rates as an average price.
