J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky - Black Pepper Wild Boar JerkyJ.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky from Glenoaks Food, Inc. is a small family owned business founded in 1995. They offer a wide variety of premium jerky made from different meats, including beef, turkey, buffalo, elk, venison, wild boar, and more. Their jerky is known for being 100% natural, with high protein content, no preservatives, and a focus on freshness. They pride themselves on their gourmet recipes, catering to traditional and adventurous tastes. J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky also emphasizes quality and customer satisfaction.

From the start, they have focused on using only high-quality, all-natural ingredients and made sure not to cut any corners in the production process. Many employees have been with us since the company was founded, and some of their children also work there. This J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky brand is distributed under the name of Glenoaks Food, Inc., located in Sun Valley, California.

The first review on J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky will focus on a 2 ounce/57 gram bag of their black pepper flavored wild boar jerky. This flavor is described as using natural slabs of wild boar combined with their gourmet black pepper marinade to create the perfect savory combination for anyone to enjoy. The bag was purchased at a convenience store in Oxnard, California.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Wild Boar (Meat From Feral Swine), Water, Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Wheat, Salt), Teriyaki Sauce (Soy Sauce [Water, Soybeans, Wheat, Salt], Wine, Sugar, Water, Vinegar, Salt, Spices, Onion Powder, Succinic Acid, Garlic Powder), Brown Sugar, Pineapple Juice, Black Pepper, Liquid Smoke, Garlic Powder, White Pepper.    Allergen Warnings: Soy, Wheat

J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky - Black Pepper Wild Boar JerkyThe wild boar is ethically raised, meaning no growth hormones or additional antibiotics are given. These wild boar also have partial free range access to roam about as nature intended. As a result, the highest ingredient rating that can be awarded is an Excellent (10/10) rating.

The liquid marinade is comprised of a decent brand of soy sauce, a respected brand of teriyaki sauce, water, healthy pineapple juice, and liquid smoke.

J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky - Black Pepper Wild Boar JerkyThe only healthy ingredients added are garlic powder, white pepper, and black pepper.

The sugar level is excellent at only 1 gram of sugar per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is somewhat high at 410mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference is 350mg of salt or less per 28 grams of jerky.

This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite. Instead, salt is the main preservative used. Admirably, this jerky has no MSG added.

Very Good (9/10) – Ingredient Rating

Taste Review

J.C. RIVERS GOURMET JERKY – BLACK PEPPER WILD BOARD JERKY

Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker

When I open the bag I smell pineapple juice. After debate, we concluded that the fruity taste is from the soy sauce. I received three pieces, two quite small and one quite large. The jerky is sliced to a medium thickness, and the slices vary. There is no oily residue with this jerky.

When I bite into the jerky I taste salt at a decent level, minimal sweetness, pepper at a decent level, and possibly some light garlic in the background. The texture of this jerky is very favorable to me. It is rigid enough to appease our forefathers who preferred rawhide jerky, as do I. This flavor of jerky is called “black pepper”, and while I do taste it, it has not come across as bold enough to impress me. I will consume more to hopefully encounter the bold pepper taste.

As I consume more, I definitely experience more of the pepper kick, which kicks up a notch or two. I absolutely love this texture. The pepper is gaining intensity as I consume more and more of this jerky. A couple more bites and my jerky experience will be over, at least until next time. By this time the pepper level is carrying the review, it is in overdrive.

Color me duly impressed. I am thoroughly enjoying this particular jerky experience, a no-doubt 10/10.

Here is what Mark had to say about this Black Pepper wild boar jerky flavor from J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky: “Thanks Paul for the positive taste review. I 100% agree with your review. I really appreciate that this jerky tastes like homemade jerky, thanks to the vacuum sealed bag. As advertised, everything about this black pepper flavor tastes natural. The wild boar has a rich taste superior to beef. The recipe used is reminiscent of my homemade beef jerky. The overall taste profile is well balanced and tastes like more. To the credit of J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky, very little sweetness is present. A unanimous Excellent (10/10) taste rating will be awarded. Take a bow J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky, a very enthusiastic two thumbs up!!👍👍”

This 2 ounce/57 gram bag of jerky sells for $10.99, which equates to $5.50 an ounce. That rates as an average price.

Excellent (10/10) – Taste Rating

Bag Review

This clear resealable bag has labels affixed to the front and back. There is a picture of a cowboy with a lasso and horses on the front. This bag is vacuum sealed, which is the best way to keep the jerky fresh tasting.

There are no slogans printed on this bag. Some facts printed are “Meat From Feral Swine”, “Natural Smoke Flavoring Added”, “100% All Natural”, “No Preservatives”, “No Nitrites”, “No MSG Added”, “Minimally Processed”, “No Artificial Ingredients”, “GFI”, and “Made in USA”.

Some missing bag categories are allergen alerts and blurb about J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky or this flavor. To the credit of J.C. Rivers Gourmet Jerky, a phone number is provided for customer inquiries.
