Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Beef, Sugar, Soy Sauce (Water, Salt), Worcestershire Sauce (Distilled White Vinegar, Molasses, Sugar, Water, Salt, Onions, Anchovies, Garlic, Cloves, Tamarind Extract, Natural Flavorings, Chili Pepper Extract), Apple Cider Vinegar, Tomatoes, Salt, Garlic Powder, Black Pepper, Onion Powder, Cayenne, Liquid Smoke. Allergen Warnings: Soy, Anchovies
100% grass-fed beef is used here, just the way nature intended. These cattle are raised ethically, meaning they are not fed growth hormones or additional antibiotics. There is also some free range access for the cattle to roam about. As a result, the ingredient rating starts at Excellent (10/10).
The liquid marinade is comprised of a gluten-free soy sauce, a well-respected brand of Worcestershire sauce, super healthy apple cider vinegar, and liquid smoke.
Some healthy ingredients added are garlic powder, black pepper, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.
The sugar level is low at 1 gram of sugar per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is high at 6000mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky to lose a rating. Our preference is 350mg or less of salt per 28 grams of jerky.
This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite or other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, the main preservative used is salt. Admirably, there is no MSG added.
Very Good (9/10) – Ingredient Rating
Taste Review
PACIFIC COAST JERKY FACTORY – BLACK PEPPER RUB GRASS FED BEEF Jerky
Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker
When I open the bag I smell the pepper. I’m truly hoping it tastes as good or better than it smells. I don’t smell much else. The jerky is sliced thin, and it is rigid, just like our forefathers intended. There is no oily residue left on your fingers.
When I bite into the jerky I taste mild salt, mild sweet, and, to my surprise, not to mention disappointment, just mild pepper as well. The jerky tastes good, but it tastes more like an original flavor than a pepper flavor. As I consume more, I hope that the pepper flavor intensifies. I may also be tasting slight garlic and onion. I believe I detect some vinegar flavor as well.
As I consume more, I am still not noticing any more intense pepper flavor. As Mark mentioned earlier, apparently the pepper flakes fell off the jerky and were resting at the bottom of the bag, but my bag does not have any of those pepper flakes. Unfortunately, I must deduct one point, therefore, for the lack of a strong pepper flavor. Again, even though this jerky tastes good, it is lacking in the “Wow!!” factor. I must hence give it an 8/10. I was so hoping to give it a higher mark, but the lack of pepper and the lack of a Wow factor make this the highest mark I can give it with a clear conscience.
Here is what Mark had to say about this Sweet & Spicy beef jerky flavor from Pacific Coast Jerky Factory: “Thanks Paul for the detailed taste review. I agree with most things stated. As Paul mentioned, we have that old age problem of black pepper falling off the strips, Normally, I would include some of the black pepper from the bottom of the bag in Paul’s portion but forgot to do so, not that there was that much anyway. Thankfully, there is minimal sweetness, which is appreciated.”
“When I first looked at the ingredient list, I knew this flavor had much potential. I was not disappointed a single bit, as the marinade used provides some ‘wow’ factor. The overall taste profile is very well-balanced and downright delicious. For grass-fed beef, the natural beef flavor is at a decent level. With Paul at an 8 rating and myself at a 9, a Very Good (9/10) taste rating will be awarded.”
This 3 ounce/85 gram bag of jerky sells for $9.00, which equates to $3.33 an ounce. That rates as a cheap price.
