Jerky’s Gourmet of San Diego – Black Pepper 100% Grass-Fed Beef Jerky

Sunday, October 4, 2015 Leave a Comment

Jerky's Gourmet of San Diego - Black Pepper 100% grass-fed Beef JerkyThe next review on Jerky’s Gourmet of San Diego will focus on a 3 ounce/85 gram bag of their black pepper 100% grass-fed beef jerky flavor. This jerky was graciously submitted for review by one of the co-founders, Tim Gertsman.

This Jerky’s Gourmet of San Diego jerky brand name is distributed by Jerky’s Gourmet, fittingly located in San Diego, California. Co-founders Tim Gertsman and Andria Taylor teamed up together in 2013 to launch this Jerky’s Gourmet of San Diego brand of jerky. Only 100% grass-fed beef is used in their jerky. This black pepper flavor happens to be their best selling flavor.

Ingredient Review

Ingredients: Grass-fed Beef, Gluten Free Soy Sauce (Water, Rice, Soybeans, Salt), Worcestershire Sauce (Distilled White Vinegar, Molasses, Sugar, Water, Salt, Onions, Anchovies, Garlic, Cloves, Tamarind Extract, Natural Flavorings, Chili Pepper Extract), Brown Sugar, Black Pepper, Natural Smoke Flavor (Water, Natural Hickory Smoke Concentrate), Salt, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder.    Allergen Warnings: Soy, Anchovies

Jerky's Gourmet of San Diego - Black Pepper 100% grass-fed Beef JerkyThe cattle used is confirmed to be 100% grass-fed, sourced from a farm in Eugene, Oregon. They are also ethically raised, meaning they are not administered growth hormones or additional antibiotics.

The liquid marinade consists of gluten free soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and liquid hickory smoke. Both of the sauces consist of very good ingredient lists.

Healthy spices are used such as onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper. Some people consider black pepper to be the King of Spices.

The sugar level is very low at only 1 gram of sugar per 28 grams of jerky. The salt level is also very low at only 105mg of salt per 28 grams of jerky.

Kudos to Jerky’s Gourmet of San Diego for having no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, the main preservative used is salt. Admirably, there is no MSG added.

Excellent (10/10) – Ingredient Rating

Taste Review

These hand sliced strips of jerky are small to medium in size, and sliced to a medium thickness. They have a great dry texture that is generally easy to chew. The actual cut of beef used is top round. There are some minor visible signs of fat that add to the overall natural beef flavor. Handling this jerky leaves no oily residue on your fingers.

The first taste detected is a great combination of soy and Worcestershire sauce. It does not take long for the peppered flavor to take notice. As you consume more strips, the black pepper reaches a good moderate level.

There is a light hickory smoked taste in the background. With almost no sweetness, the natural beef flavor stands out. The saltiness level is minor at best. Overall, a great job for a black pepper flavor.

This 2.75 ounce/78 gram bag sells online for $8.99. That works out to $3.00 an ounce, which rates as an expensive price. This jerky is certainly recommended from both a health and taste perspective.

Excellent (10/10) – Taste Rating

Bag Review

This is a standard sized resealable bag. There is a label affixed to the front, and nothing on the back. There is a great high resolution picture of a Ballast Point Habanero Sculpin beer on the label, which puts this label over the top.

There are no clearly defined slogans printed on the bag. Some facts printed on the bag are “100% Grass Fed Beef”, “Premium Jerky”, “Top Shelf”, “Low in Sodium”, “No Artificial Preservatives”, “No Nitrites”, “No Hormones”, “No Antibiotics”, and “Natural Smoke Flavor Added”.

All major bag categories are covered. The only minor bag category missing is that the jerky weight is not stated in grams.

Good (8/10) – Bag Rating
