The EPIC jerky brand name was created by Taylor Collins and Katie Forrest. Both Taylor and Katie are physically active, and were looking for foods to satisfy their needs. Then they started eating a paleo diet. Shortly afterwards, they set out to create the world’s first 100% grass fed meat, fruit, and nut bar. This EPIC jerky brand is distributed by Epic Provisions, located in Austin, Texas. In January 2016, the very large conglomerate General Mills acquired Epic Provisions.
The next review on EPIC will be on a 0.8 ounce/23 gram bag of their Smoked Maple flavored salmon jerky. This flavor is described as a tender and flavorful snack guaranteed to satisfy your inner carnivore. The bag was purchased at an Ollie’s discount store located in Niagara Falls, New York.
Ingredient Review
Ingredients: Wild Caught Salmon, Maple Sugar, Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Sea Salt, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Dill.
Of any type of jerky, wild salmon might rank the healthiest of them all. Salmon is known to be very healthy, and it is especially loaded with the fatty acid Omega 3. As a result, the ingredient rating starts at an Excellent (10/10) rating.
The texture of this jerky is chopped and formed. As a result, without having a natural whole muscle sliced strip of jerky, two ingredient ratings are deducted.
There are some healthy ingredients added such as onion powder, garlic powder, and dill.
The sugar level is acceptable at 4 grams of sugar per 23 grams of jerky for a sweet based flavor as we have here. The salt level is reasonable at 260mg of salt per 23 grams of jerky.
This jerky does qualify to have no sodium nitrite, or any other similar unhealthy preservatives. Instead, the main preservative used is sea salt, which is minimally processed, and high on minerals. With further kudos, there is also no MSG added.

Taste Review
EPIC – SMOKED MAPLE SALMON JERKY
Written by guest jerky reviewer Paul Rekker
When I open the bag, I smell strong salmon. The bag consists of one long strip of jerky. The strip of jerky is long and shiny, but it is dry. It is soft and chewy. Their is no oily residue left on your fingers.
The first flavors I encounter are salt, too much sweet, garlic, pepper, onion and natural salmon flavor. I like this flavor, but I do not love it. I am a big fan of salmon, but this does not taste enough like salmon. Salmon is not sweet, this jerky is.
Their is nothing inherently wrong with this jerky, it is decent, but not great. A 7 or 8/10 at best gentlemen.
Here is what Stéphane had to say: “The Epic Salmon Fillet Smoked Maple Strip pleasantly focuses around the salmon and maple without overwhelming your nose or taste buds. There is a nice balance where the other flavors such as the smokiness and onions are light and gently yield to the great taste of wild salmon and maple.”
“I really enjoyed this jerky and find it to be just as advertised. As I can’t find any fault, I am in line with an Excellent 10/10 taste rating.”
Here is what Mark had to say about this Smoked Maple salmon jerky flavor from EPIC: “Thanks Stéphane and Paul. I am more inline with Paul here, where the natural taste of salmon is processed tasting being chopped and formed. With that said, Sid from the Group of Seven gave this flavor a 9 rating, his highest rating ever, and only for the second time. Bill who acts a fill in for the Group of Seven and he loved this flavor also. An 8 or 9 taste rating is deserved here.”
This 0.8 ounce/23 gram bag cost 59 cents, which works out to 74 cents an ounce. That rates as an extremely cheap price, granted it was purchased from a discount store.
Bag Review
This plastic bag has everything printed directly on the bag itself, and nothing printed on the back. There is a drawing of a salmon on the front. This bag is vacuum sealed, the best way to keep jerky fresh tasting.
There are no slogans printed on this bag. Some facts printed are “Salmon Fillet”, “7G of Protein”, “Gluten Free”, “Made With 100% Wild Caught Salmon”. There are stamps printed that states “Non-GM Certified”, and “Gluten Certified”.
All bag categories are covered with this bag. Commendably, a phone number is provided for customer inquiries. The @EPICBAR handle is displayed for Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
